The China Digital Times has an interview with Wang Keqin by Jonathan Ansfield.
For those of you who are in the mainland and can’t access the site, Wang basically says he doesn’t think that Lan’s case should be discussed in the context of watchdog journalism or “media supervision” as I did yetserday. He argues that the fake journalists give real journalists a bad name and only make it harder for them to resist censorship. I don’t doubt that’s the case, but I also think if the government loosened up restrictions on good real journalists like Wang and it might help counteract the forces that have begun to so badly corrode the Chinese media. Wang admits that the parts of his story that described corruption in the media were censored. Maybe if he and others could publish stories about this corruption, it wouldn’t be flourishing.
