French Satirical Cartoons Spark Ire in the Arab Spring’s Birthplace

Charlie Hebdo's offensive cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad led to protests and fears of violence across the Muslim world, including the place where the Arab Spring's upheavals first began

After a week of anti-American violence in several cities over the “Innocence of Muslims” video, the rage pivoted on Wednesday to another Western country—France—after the satirical French weekly Charlie Hebdo published cartoons lampooning a naked, clownish Prophet Muhammad, which seemed tailored to provoke outrage. Already on edge after the days of Islamic protests, including in Paris, the French government rapidly ordered shut its embassies and schools in about 20 Muslim majority countries.

In this North African capital, where the anti-American violence last Friday had already shut the U.S. embassy and the American school, French officials sent text messages at dawn to the parents of French schoolchildren, telling them to keep the young pupils away until Monday. On the very avenue where demonstrations drove out Tunisia’s dictator in Jan. 2011, inspiring the Arab Spring, the French Embassy remained shut, as officials feared they could be the next target; in the protests last Friday, militant Islamists stormed the U.S. embassy grounds a few miles from downtown Tunis, then ransacked and torched parts of the American school. By late Wednesday, riot-police vans and plain-clothed security forces surrounded the French Embassy, and a French official peering through the tall, blue gates of the mansion said all visitors were being turned away.

(PHOTOS: Protests Rage in Middle East, Sparked by Anti-Islamic Film)

Yet despite the past week’s events, in which several people were killed—including the US Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens—for the editors of Charlie Hebdo, the cartoons of the Muslim Prophet were all in a day’s work. Brushing off concerns that they could ignite fresh violence, editor in chief Gerard Biard told BBC World on Wednesday that such drawings were a core feature of his publication. “It is our job,” he said. “We are a satirical, political magazine. We publish in France, which is a laïc [secular] nation. We are against all religions.”

Indeed, the magazine hardly spares Jews, either. The cover of the 16-page weekly shows a man in traditional black Hasidic garb, pushing the Prophet in a wheelchair under the headline, “Intouchables 2.” That is a reference to a hit French movie of earlier this year, which centered on the culture clash between a white paraplegic Frenchman and his black, Muslim caregiver. The magazine’s back page shows a naked Prophet Muhammad being filmed close up, asking: “You like my buttocks?” Eight smaller cartoons alongside it all depict the Prophet in various states of ridicule. Rare for France, they include too a close-to-the-bone reference to the Holocaust—typically off-limits for French satirists—showing a crouching, naked Muhammad, with the yellow star Jews were forced to wear under Nazi rule affixed to his crotch, under the caption: “A star is born.”

(MORE: Political Battles in Tunisia Shade Attacks on U.S. Embassy)

In Tunis, the response from Muslim activists was swift, as conservative Islamic sites lit up with enraged comments. On the Facebook page of a Salafist mosque outside Tunis, one person wrote that the ruling Islamist Ennahda Party should “do the same [to France] as you did with the U.S.: Kick out the Ambassador, tell them that we don’t need your investments.” After Friday’s attack, the State Depatment withdrew almost all its diplomats from Tunisia—a country that until now had been widely seen by the West as the one clear success story of the Arab Spring revolutions. Although many Tunisians have expressed outrage about the video, there are many too who fear that their country—the ranking democratic moderate in North Africa—might be seen by Americans, and now the French, as anti-Western. “”We are very open here,” said Nabil Mhamdi, 36, a theater technician sipping a glass of red wine (legal in Tunisia) in a downtown hotel lobby on Wednesday. “I don’t like the fact that people are reducing Tunisia to an extreme, closed minority.”

Some 20 months after the Jasmine Revolution here inspired the Arab Spring, the stakes are especially high for France, the country’s former colonial master until the 1950s. France has Europe’s biggest Muslim population, millions of them from Tunisia. For decades, it maintained close ties to Tunisia’s dictator, Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, and French companies still have billions in investments here. When Tunisia’s revolution exploded in late 2010, the former French Minister of Defense Michelle Aillot-Marie offered to send French troops to help protect Ben Ali. And although she was fired in an ensuing scandal, many Tunisians say they still do not entirely trust France’s intentions.

(MORE: Did the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi Not Have Enough Security?)

Now French officials fear being the next target in the current wave of protests. In Paris last Saturday, hundreds of Muslims converged on the U.S. Embassy to protest the video, and Muslim groups said on Tuesday—before the Charlie Hebdo cartoons appeared—that they planned further protests in Paris this Saturday; Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault said on Wednesday that the government would not issue permits for that demonstration.

Still, it could be difficult to halt demonstrations in this region. “Now we have a period of tolerance and openness,” says Mhamdi. “Before, under Ben Ali, these Salafists were all locked up and jail. Now, they can speak—and they are.”

Hey, loved the cartoons.  If you could do more movies maybe we could get the muslim population to self destruct (mind blowing cartoons and movies).  Muslims give new meaning to stupidity.  After all mohommad was a pervert that liked children for his sex toys.  So why are these idiots upset over a few cartoons and movies that don't depict the pervert as he really was- its a violent perverted religion.

I deeply respect the Muslims whom come here to explain their ways with kindness and intellect...

However could somebody explain to me these scary parts of the Koran?

I have issue with the scary parts of the Koran like so.

Quran (2:191-193) - "And slay them wherever ye find them, and drive them out of the places whence they drove you out, for persecution [of Muslims] is worse than slaughter [of non-believers]... but if they desist, then lo! Allah is forgiving and merciful.   And fight them until persecution is no more, and religion is for Allah."

Quran (3:56) - "As to those who reject faith, I will punish them with terrible agony in this world and in the Hereafter, nor will they have anyone to help."

Quran (4:89) - "They but wish that ye should reject Faith, as they do, and thus be on the same footing (as they): But take not friends from their ranks until they flee in the way of Allah (From what is forbidden). But if they turn renegades, seize them and slay them wherever ye find them; and (in any case) take no friends or helpers from their ranks."

Excellent! I am glad you posted the verses of Quran that are unacceptable in the 21st century world. It shows how intolerant the religion is. It is understandable that in the 7th century when social sciences have not developed to the extent as today where TOLERANCE of other religions and cultures is one of the greatest advancements ,such religious teachings were accepted by the societies. But everything changes and progresses with time. If the culture/society hangs on the 7th century teachings verbatim, it translates into the hate of Islamic Fundamentalists. Most religions which has such preachings like Christianity as you mentioned have  come out of the historical context and adopted tolerance in the modern day 21 century context. Islamic cultures have not. That is the fundamental difference between Islam and other religions.

Drew Hadz
Drew Hadz

It is very hard indeed to find Muslims willing to explain the scary parts of the Koran.

Likewise the Bible has some awful garbage in there we rarely talk about... Anyone remember God sending She Bears to kill the kids who made fun of Elijah?

These Salafists need to be tried and punished with religion no longer being an excuse to being allowed to be criminals of monstrous evil.

It is just a matter of time before west realizes that Ben Ali, Mubarak and Saddam Hussein were right in keeping these violent religious zealots in prison. The Islamic Fundamentalists/Salafists/Wahhabis preach their religion with extreme violence. It has been the case since Islam's birth in the 7th century.

Drew Hadz

While they did have an orgy of conquering there was a curious phase in the history of Islam sometimes called the Islamic Enlightenment... for a time in the middle ages the middle east was a  much kinder place to live with there being tolerance for all religion and science outdoing  Europe...Out numbers are Arabic numerals and thus our math is based upon this period of Islam.... Modern chemistry was founded in the Islamic middle east... It was a golden age...

and then something happened... Fundamentalism destroyed it as at one time art with Mohamed in it was fine... the fundies destroyed what was once tolerated under Islam.

The same crap is happening today with creationists weirdos and Christian and even the Ultra orthodox Jews becoming crazy fundies....

ProwdLiberal

Yes I agree. Almost all civilizations had their golden era. The Chinese, the Incas and the Aztecs, the Ottoman empire, the British empire and the American empire that has been going on for the last 200 years. Since their Islamic Enlightenment the extremists took over and IMPOSED their extreme interpretation of the religion on the moderates. The unfortunate part of the present day Islamic societies is that the moderates are scared of the fundamentalists. Even for very minor infringements like blasphemy it is always DEATH in Islam. No other religion is so draconian.

May President Obama and the American people now know the one True name of God in the Bible

18 Give ear, our God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. 19 Lord, listen! Lord, forgive! Lord, hear and act! For your sake, my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”.

Daniel 9:18-19 (NIV).

And in 2 Chronicles 7:12-14 (NIV)

12 the Lord appeared to him at night and said:

“I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for myself as a temple for sacrifices.

13 “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

The people of God are called Israel.

If the city and the people of God are called Israel, and the city and the People of Israel bear and are called by the Name of God, (Dan.9:18-19 amp; 2 Chr.7:12-14), what is the Name of God?

The Name of God is ISRAEL ! Our God is LORD GOD ISRAEL!

Is it true that we are experiencing God's wrath at present because we do not call on His true name?

Pour out your wrath on the nations that do not acknowledge you,on the peoples who do not call on your name. For they have devoured Jacob;they have devoured him completely and destroyed his homeland.

Jeremiah 10:25 (NIV)

We have come to know the Name of God and the question of Maestro Evangelista is: What blessings will we receive from God?

"Because he loves me," says the LORD, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

        Psalm 91:14-16 (NIV).

God will not forsake those who will call on His Great Name!

May you know more of God's True name in the Bible and why He gave it first to Jacob and His message for our time in www.thename.ph.

Disastrous events will continue to happen all over the world, for the people to realize that the world is cursed. These will only stop when they accept and acknowledge the true Name of God -who we should call LORD GOD ISRAEL

Anyone from Christ, to Mohammed, or Bill Clinton should be able to be satirized in any fashion that people so wish, because free speech means acknowledging that others are allowed to say or publish what they wish no matter how offensive you find it.

Your people shoot others or blow them up with bombs over cartoons... and because of that there should be more cartoons and publications satirizing the "holy man of those whom will blow us up if they are angry".

People have passed ruthless judgement on Muhammad. He has been labeled as a pedophile, a terrorist, a murderer, you name it. But I would just like to share his words before his passing. It is something he had requested and I am proud to do it. Here goes. Read it with an open mind, like a son listening to his father. Thank you.

Prophet Muhammad's Last Sermon

Date delivered: 632 A.C., 9th day of Dhul

al Hijjah, 10 A.H. in the 'Uranah valley of Mount Arafat.

After praising, and thanking God, he said: "O People, listen well to my words, for I do not know whether, after this year, I shall ever be amongst you again. Therefore listen to what I am saying to you very carefully and TAKE THESE WORDS TO THOSE WHO COULD NOT BE PRESENT HERE TODAY.

O People, just as you regard this month, this day, this city as Sacred, so regard the life and property of every Muslim as a sacred trust. Return the goods entrusted to you to their rightful owners. Treat others justly so that no one would be unjust to you. Remember that you will indeed meet your LORD, and that HE will indeed reckon your deeds. God has forbidden you to take usury (riba), therefore all riba obligation shall henceforth be waived. Your capital , however, is yours to keep. You will neither inflict nor suffer inequity. God has judged that there shall be no riba and that all the riba due to `Abbas ibn `Abd al Muttalib shall henceforth be waived.

Every right arising out of homicide in pre-Islamic days is henceforth waived and the first such right that I waive is that arising from the murder of Rabi`ah ibn al Harith ibn `Abd al Muttalib.

O Men, the Unbelievers indulge in tampering with the calendar in order to make permissible that which God forbade, and to forbid that which God has made permissible. With God the months are twelve in number. Four of them are sacred, three of these are successive and one occurs singly between the months of Jumada and Sha`ban. Beware of the devil, for the safety of your religion. He has lost all hope that he will ever be able to lead you astray in big things, so beware of following him in small things.

O People, it is true that you have certain rights over your women, but they also have rights over you. Remember that you have taken them as your wives only under God's trust and with His permission. If they abide by your right then to them belongs the right to be fed and clothed in kindness. Treat your women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers. It is your right and they do not make friends with anyone of whom you do not approve, as well as never to be unchaste...

O People, listen to me in earnest, worship God (The One Creator of the Universe), perform your five daily prayers (Salah), fast during the month of Ramadan, and give your financial obligation (zakah) of your wealth. Perform Hajj if you can afford to.

All mankind is from Adam and Eve, an Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; also a white has no superiority over a black nor a black has any superiority over white except by piety and good action. Learn that every Muslim is a brother to every Muslim and that the Muslims constitute one brotherhood. Nothing shall be legitimate to a Muslim which belongs to a fellow Muslim unless it was given freely and willingly. Do not, therefore, do injustice to yourselves.

Remember, one day you will appear before God (The Creator) and you will answer for your deeds. So beware, do not stray from the path of righteousness after I am gone.

O People, NO PROPHET OR MESSENGER WILL COME AFTER ME AND NO NEW FAITH WILL BE BORN. Reason well, therefore, O People, and understand words which I convey to you. I am leaving you with the Book of God (the QUR'AN*) and my SUNNAH (the life style and the behavioral mode of the Prophet), if you follow them you will never go astray.

All those who listen to me shall pass on my words to others and those to others again; and may the last ones understand my words better than those who listen to me directly. Be my witness O God, that I have conveyed your message to your people

Ill give you that one... Muhammad was most likely a very good man who taught many enlightened things. And SOME things are indeed offensive and are rightly called offensive.

However the appropriate response is never violence... Explaining why Muhammad (and indeed peace be upon him) was a good man is the way islam should address these things.

I have learned a thing or two from your material and appreciate it.

i dont accuse all the muslims of being same low minded as the taliban clearly are. what i accuse you of is the selective way in which you react when other religions are disrespected by you. no muslim spoke openly against the taliban for what they did, or for what happens in muslim countries against "non beleievers" or "infideles" as you call them (i.e. what happens in Egypt against christian copts). but when someone dared to accuse Mohammed despite the fact that he was an individual representing only himself, all of you muslims errupted in violence against the whole of the western world. this is HYPOCRITICAL when you claim to respect other's religions

Drew Hadz

Again you are correct about the Islamic Enlightenment... If one were to pick a place to live in the middle ages the middle east was the place of tolerance and science...

But what about Islam then has changed? Islam represented tolerance and a bright acceptance of science...

the taliban were indeed very civilized when the blew up the ancient statues of  Bamian Budhas in Afghanistan while chanting prayers to Allah and claiming that they did it in God's name and under his commandments. you all were silent then and now you are outraged because you can't stand the idea that anyboby can publish anything on Mohhamed that doesn't agree with your beliefs. you all act as if you hold some supreme truth over everything in life. like christians did but this was 600 years ago in middle ages Europe. this is were you are now, hundreds of years behind!

Hello Drew, As I can see you are an open minded person for the versus you just mentioned you have to connect the before and after versus to what you had read it is connected in Quran, but I can explain to you by giving examples: If you are safe in your home and strangers came to attack you in your home because of your relegion what will be your reaction ,ofcourse you will defend your self, secondly from 1400 years ago wars was not the same like now it was done in places far from the women and children and seniors houses it was with sword just between soliders, the main aim of Islam then was to make Islam enter all the unislamic countries it was called the Islamic Opening and all the non muslim were not force to enter islam they were paying somthing called:gaziya: in arabic it is like tax or somthing and they all lived in peace as in my country. my the way my best friend is christian so she can be my friend but i never start arguing with her religion issues becuse God said in Quran i have my own relegion and others have their own.About what happened after ward in the islamic nations this will take me  to hateful path that i do not want to go to ,i wil  give you a hint the dirty game of politique.........why they are concentrating in this area of the world actually i left Egypt 2 years ago and i can not tell you what it feels like to be away from home because you want a better place for you own children to live in .me too as  muslim i had my lovely memories ,enjoying my present, dreaming that one day i can walk in the westren streets without being judged of how i am dressed like or what is my faith because this is a hard feeling for me,and i always have the challenging skill to send the right and good message of islam to anyone doesnot know.by the way i refused the way that miniority of muslims acted toward the movie, what i did is sent a request to the youtube to block the movie, and trying to send a message to united nation to put regulation concerning religion bulling thanks

What they (Muslims) mean is there is no other God except their God called Allah AND if you do not agree they will kill you. That is what Islam/Koran is all about and it has been like that throughout the Islamic history.
