China’s online vigilantes turned into international crime fighters this week after a priceless 3,500-year-old artifact was vandalized in Egypt. Weibo user Kongyouwuyi uploaded a photo of the offending graffiti that was reposted 90,000 times in just 10 hours. “I felt embarrassed,” he said. “It was my most unhappy moment in Egypt.” Finding the culprit did not take a supersleuth, however, as the scrawled phrase “Ding Jinhao was here” did not denote a criminal genius. The 15-year-old’s ashamed parents soon realized the game was up and contacted their local newspaper in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, to confess all. But the human-flesh hunt did not stop there; Ding’s personal details were published online, reporters descended on the family home and his school’s website was hacked.
