The run-up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics was a time of great national pride for China during which discussing unsettling matters — like human-rights abuses in Tibet — was considered unpatriotic and tantamount to treason. Unfortunately, one young Chinese exchange student in the U.S. did not get this memo. And so when Grace Wang tried to mediate between pro-Tibet and pro-China protesters at North Carolina’s Duke University, where she was studying, a photo appeared on an online forum the next day with “Traitor to your country” emblazoned across her forehead. Her Chinese name, identification number, contact information and directions to her parents’ home in Qingdao were also posted. Their apartment was subsequently attacked, although nobody was hurt.
