Japan’s most active volcano began erupting on Sunday, spewing ash and dust over the neighboring city of Kagoshima. City residents are used to the mountain’s temperamental behavior—Mount Sakurajima has erupted 500 times so far this year. Clean up efforts are underway to remove the ash, which now covers much of the city. Residents are using masks and umbrellas to protect themselves, but life seems to be continuing mostly as usual. According to the Japanese news website Japan Today, this is the volcano’s biggest eruption since 2000.
