Former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak was released from prison and placed under house arrest Thursday, more than two years after he was deposed during the Arab Spring uprisings.
A court had ordered Wednesday that Mubarak, who ruled Egypt for 30 years, be released while he awaits a retrial against him for complicity in the killing of protesters during the protests against him. Video footage Thursday showed the ailing 85-year-old being transported by helicopter to a military hospital.
Mubarak’s release comes amid ongoing violence and political turmoil since the ouster of Mubarak’s successor, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, earlier this summer.
