The first study of worldwide drug use has concluded that marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the world, but far less deadly than painkillers like Vicodin, Oxycontin and codeine, The Associated Press reports.

The study, published by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, also found that men in their 20s were most likely to use illegal drugs.  Researchers found that drug abuse was most common in the U.S., Australia, Britain and Russia, and least common in Africa and Asia.

The research also indicated that countries with harsh drug laws have higher addict death rates than countries that focus on rehabilitation programs.
