Study: Marijuana World’s Most Popular, Least Dangerous Drug

Countries with harsh drug laws have higher addict death rates

The first study of worldwide drug use has concluded that marijuana is the most widely used illegal drug in the world, but far less deadly than painkillers like Vicodin, Oxycontin and codeine, The Associated Press reports.

The study, published by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, also found that men in their 20s were most likely to use illegal drugs.  Researchers found that drug abuse was most common in the U.S., Australia, Britain and Russia, and least common in Africa and Asia.

The research also indicated that countries with harsh drug laws have higher addict death rates than countries that focus on rehabilitation programs.

Articles like this are a blasphemy to our substance religion. We must allow government total censorship of the internet so we can continue the substance preaching we began in school.

If we don't, all of your children will become zombie stoner marijuana addicts and ruin their lives like: Oprah, George Washington, Steve Jobs, Michael Phelps, William Shakespeare, Thomas Jefferson, Bill Clinton, Brad Pitt, Morgan Freeman, John F Kennedy, Queen Victoria, Bruce Lee, or Bill Gates.

We created a list of criteria by which to score substances. If they got a bad score it gives us permission to demand sovereignty of body and mind, not allowing their human consumption. Our actions are justified by our list! It is law and we demand you follow it! (Please ignore the fact that we decided to give a free pass to our two favorite substances because we knew they would score too poorly. We just need this one gimme and we can make this entire substance model work! Oh, and we need a monopoly on regulation, education, and research too. These plants are so dangerous, no one but us should have any official say about them.)

Just to put some perspective on the situation...I'm nearing 50 years old, been using marijuana regularly since I was 15.  I graduated college with a 4.0, and have a very successful career as a software engineer, going on 25 years now.  People told me the stuff would rot my brain...still waiting.  I gave up booze and harder drugs, but this relaxes me and helps me unwind after a long day like nothing else.  A good fit for a serious type A like myself, not seeing the downside.  And don't say addiction!  I've quit for months at a time when preparing for job changes to pass any drug tests that might be required (all of which I've passed).

The harsher the drug law the more profit there is in it.

@TIMEWorld I could care less if it is legal or not. Yet it isn't safe as metformin which can cause MGH-Case-Record #23 of 2013

Google Federal intoxicants Act and you'll find proposed legislation that will completely end federal cannabis prohibition,

If marijuana wasn't illegal then more of it would be used, resulting in less use of the dangerous drugs. Less harm in society means less harm to our children. For the sake of our loved ones we need to legalize marijuana like beer and wine.

We are close to getting these stupid laws off the books. We got Same-sex marriage legal, soon Cannabis, next legalize brothels. This puritan christian bull stuff has gone on long enough.

Cannabis is one of the few nontoxic substances on earth,,,even water is toxic but cannabis isn't,,enough said on safety.

History fills in the rest of the unknowns that prohibitionist wring their hands over because until 1937 mankind used cannabis for all it's uses including as an intoxicant and medicine with no historical mention of societies that became couch potatoes, raving schizophrenia patients or men that grew tits. And apparently it didn't lower IQ enough to slow mankind down,,especially since the most creative people throughout history were drug users,,some a lot worse and more dangerous than cannabis.

@DemetriPerson@TIME@runner_elithose drugs each has 100's of thousands of deaths per year. Marijuana, 0. Marijuana is safer so quit driving people to drink. Tylenol was on the news today, new red warnings on the bottle cap. It destroys your liver, especially if you drink.

@TIMEWorld care less if it legal for non-medical use. I do think it should be a C2 controlled substance

@jefnvk You can kill yourself with too much caffeine but you can't with too much cannabis.

@jefnvk pretty much what I was thinking, tobacco clearly qualifies, caffeine and alcohol both have legitimate purposes beyond that of a "drug", but can be abused.

@PhillyCannabis coming to a corner near you: drive through brothels like those in Zurich.  Thumbs up, even if I don't wish to partake in any of it (same-sex, canabis, brothels...).
