2 Million Syrian Children Are Not Going to School, UN Says

Nearly two million Syrian children — virtually an entire generation of the country’s kids — have dropped out of school over the last year, the UN said Friday, presenting yet another grim marker of the devastation caused by the country’s more than two-year-old civil war.

The figure represents almost 40 percent of all Syrian children in grades one through nine.

“For a country that was close to achieving universal primary education before the conflict started, the numbers are staggering,” Maria Calivis, UNICEF Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in the statement. “Displacement, violence, fear and instability are robbing hundreds of thousands of children of the joy of learning.” More than 6 million Syrians, over a fourth of the population, have been displaced from their homes, the UN said Tuesday, including 2 million people who have fled the country entirely.

Many are among the one million child refuges who have fled Syria and have not found proper schooling in their new country. A third or less of the Syrian children in neighboring Iraq, Lebanon, and Jordan are in formal schooling.

In the Za’taari refugee camp in Jordan, the world’s second largest and fastest growing such camp, 12,000 of the 30,000 school-aged children in the camp are registered for school. Human rights groups are scrambling to provide education resources and ensure access. The UN said last month that organizations have ensured education for more than 118,000 children as part of a broader humanitarian effort that it called the largest ever.

But education remains among the least funded missions, UNICEF said. Of the $161 million in requested aid for education, only $51 million has been received.

Very sad that the young generation is suffering the consequence of war. I fear that its future may be compromised if an urgent action is not taken soon. http://bit.ly/16qINmJ

If we fund their education, then they could find jobs that make the money to feed and clothe themselves and we wouldn't have to bother with our "obligation" to provide for the whole world anymore.

I think this is what will show us is, the doomsday or last judgement of the world  is coming soon.,look at this catastrophe of day in ,day out.  People of  this different world done something  wrong with the name of science ,with the name of civilization with the name of religion, with the name of freedom and democracy.  now where we were  going after  this disaster World? Why don't believe the true way of God through his mercy and preaching love to his commandments at the right place at the right time. No need of technology to destroy human being ,No need of religion preaching hate and discrimination ,No need of intervention between one country of a diverse people with name of race ,religion ,freedom, democracy..in order to keep of self interest of the mediators. why did do this America? why didn't  show little more respect of  the rest of the world ? If America likes  to do something to do so. If she don't like or  any nation something wrong with her interest ..she grave the ground flesh to flesh and dust to dust why? Most Arab countries are with hand of American intervention to control the petroleum and oil products for their Economic consumption ,and on the other hand to weakened the antagonistic former socialist  Russia and to control over all Economy of the world ,with the Name of Capitalism  and to Hang on the slogan of democracy and freedom. ,whatsoever ,America did't seeking the truth  and peace of the world ,to the contrary, she made a terrible mistake  and  crime over the innocents  of in this assembled World. Don't confuse us with those who tarnish with name of Islam supported by America and on the other hand ,by her Voice the so called  a Terrorist . who training Osoma-Biladen ?,Who support other Extremist  and rebels  ?  May be  for few of us it was Clue ,but The World  knows each and every movement of westerns specially the  Africans ,they knew's  very well . You know what to do America ? on the right  hand she was fanning the fire and on the left hand  side she will try to extinguish after made a Flame and destroyed  everything ...so what is next ..? I hope we expected the bare world after this all disaster of human being in every where to kill and die, with out  inhuman and a devilish style of genocide .........................! God bless  them your blessed people be with you always in your shelter and under in your command. we don't need a preacher to pretended your  words  as a tool of Religion ,freedom and democracy .

Btw America is not a superpower - far from it. Super powers are a country that are able to feed all its people, home them, protect them, and be ahead of things - sorry America you at the bottom of the list. China is far more advanced and sorted, so is Dubai

War as well as threats are a direct violation of human rights. What happened to the country (USA) who profess human rights as the highest value? Oh yes I forgot, they are the same people who are ruled by dictatorship - under the guise of democracy. Military dictates to gov and gov to people and people have no say not can affect change. And then they play world police. I'm so glad I live in South Africa

But the USA likes to be the 'Big Brother' to the rest of the world and 'forces' its policies onto less powerful states - we often don't have an option but to do as the USA bids! If you Americans don't like where, or how your elected leaders are spending your dollars then that should be reflected at your polls! And the UN pays lip service as a representative organisation - while ever the big 5 of USA, UK , Russia, France n China call the shots - the rest of the world is manipulated, threatened or coerced into support of THEIR policies. USA needs to look at who calls the shots in Washington, what is the price you pay as citizens , for the back room power of your Defence Industry? Americans you can't have it all your way - there is a price to pay for being the world super power!

Joe Stoner. You took the words out of my mouth. All that comes to mind for me when I read this is what about Detroit, and Louisiana? If we can't even take care of our own how dare we claim that we can do so for others? Depressingly assigning.

And our U.S. Military needs to put its spending on the U.S. Military.

Oh my goodness. We feed, clothe, and immunize half the world. If we spent more on our own education system, people might actually pay attention to our spending and realize how much foreign aid we give. We should be as concerned with the abused and impoverished children in this country. We'd have more people in college and less in prison. Let the U.N. do something about these international problems. The United in United Nations is not supposed to mean the U.S. does everything.

Are any of you real Americans? Not paid sock puppets for war? So what. You know how many kids here drop out of school because they are screwed and poor? A lot more. A hell of a lot more. This is yet another propaganda story in line with the argument that invading Syria is a good thing. I cant stand that we are being hoodwinked and bamboozled into thinking this war is good thing, a preemptive thing. The truth is not what they are telling us. Putin is sounding more rational than any of the elected puppets here. Was war good for Iraq? No. Over 1.5 million of them are dead. The US kills innocent people and uses depleted uranium munitions there on top of that they are also fluoridating the water. Birth defects and cancer in Fallujah are astounding. Major political analysts are saying WW3, playing right into the book of these globalist, banker monsters. God help save us all.http://rt.com/op-edge/mother-chemical-attack-footage-fraud-509/

It's too bad that we can't just permanently separate all the people that want to fight and kill each other over religion and politics from those that don't care about religion or politics and just want to lead their lives. I wish there was a way that we could easily do that. Then everyone that wanted to fight and kill each other could go do that in a place where they would all just eventually end up dead - and then no one would even care about them. They could have all the death, dying and destruction they wanted - and they could have it all to themselves too.

Excellent. This is where the US military could put its funding. If Republicans would allow such a thing. C'mon President Obama, put the conservatives in their place and move funding to education in both domestic and foreign problem areas.
