Syria says it accepts the Russian proposal to surrender chemical weapons

President Barack Obama agreed to discussions with the United Nations Security Council on a Russian proposal to secure Syria’s chemical weapons as the potential diplomatic solution gains steam, the Associated Press reports

France, initially a strong supporter of a military strike on Syria, said Tuesday that it intended to propose a UN Security Council resolution in support of the Russian-proposed plan, which has also won support from China. Both Russia and China oppose a military strike, eliminating the chance for a UN-backed military operation.

Syria’s Foreign Minister said Tuesday that his government agreed to the Russian plan, proposed Monday, so as to “derail the U.S. aggression,” the Associated Press reports. Russia is working with Syria to produce a detailed action plan that will be finalized with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, the Russian foreign minister said. The Arab League president told reporters Tuesday that he supported the Russian proposal.

Obama on Monday expressed deep skepticism over the plan but said it was “potentially a significant breakthrough.” He is expected to deliver a national address Tuesday on the Syrian crisis.

Iraq actions caused Libya to hand over all of their WMDs, yet Bush was not praised for that. And he actually handed them over. The old USSR only capitulated after Pershing Missiles were placed in Western Europe, and not one was shot - but who got the Peace Prize? Gorbachev...

Like the facts that we can believe he will hand all of them over? Not likely - Middle East Dictators have experience delaying things like this and then not complying with the agreement at all.

The world doesn't even have a proof that it was Assad's action and not the rebels, dude. Chill out and look at the facts.

Sorry, Mr. President, but the Russians have taken the lead on this one.  Please relax, sit back and watch how professionals get things done.

In Iraq, the mistake was to base involvement on WMDs. Saddam was simply not meeting the terms of surrender from our prior invasion. The US has no position to create war against Syria without international support. This solution brings world powers into agreement and helps to solidify the premises of the Geneva convention. Our country needs to focus on curing our rot from within. The plutocracy forced into our elections is corrupting the foundations of our winning formula; "In God We Trust, as a balance of ONE between control and freedom."We must restore the checks and balances in our system. Our justice system has fallen prey to manipulation.

Obama, Cameron, Hollande agree to probe Russia's Syria plan at UN

President Barack Obama has agreed with his French and British counterparts to "explore seriously" a Russian proposal to defuse the Syria chemical weapons crisis at the United Nations on Tuesday, a US official said.

The discussion will test the viability of the plan with a view to enshrining commitments in a Security Council resolution, the official said.

President Barack Obama spoke by phone earlier with French President Francois Holland and British Prime Minister David Cameron about the Russian proposal.

"They agreed to work closely together, and in consultation with Russia and China, to explore seriously the viability of the Russian proposal to put all Syrian chemical weapons and related materials fully under international control in order to ensure their verifiable and enforceable destruction," the White House offical said.

"These efforts will begin today at the United Nations, and will include a discussion on elements of a potential U.N. Security Council Resolution," the official said in a statement.

We don't need anything defending.  Obama has proven to be the wiliest, craftiest, most effective politician I've eve seen.

A cope out if  there ever was one. Mr Obama clearly painted himself into a corner and he now has the need to "unpaint" himself. How low and weak have we sunk? Pretty low in my judgement.

Thank God, John Kerry made that suggestion, as everyone was clearly stock and war seems a quick fix for every situation.....100 points for the Obama administration

This is definitely a step in the right direction. If the use of chemical weapons is going to be sanctioned by international standards, then there does need to be an international response, rather than strictly US intervention.

Partial solution: Does this mean that Syria will sign the (1993) agreement to ban chemical weapons? Even if Al Assad surrenders control of chemical weapons...what about the rebel groups?

Russia is a one party mafia state. Just thought you might like to know. Chemical weapons are still bad. I don't think converting to religious communism is your best bet anyway.

I'm agreeing with the idea that Obama and Putin came to this agreement together... Obama doesn't want to fire the missles and Putin doesn't wan't it either... he needed Putin to help him save face... It can't be as simple as Russia just deciding to jump in and be the good guy...

It's a hell of a world. Your given the choice between giving up your country to US backed Al Quada or US backed nuclear armed Israel. Yet there is still exactly zero evidence that the Syrian government was the ones that used the gas. In fact the evidence points heavily toward foreign fighters.

This situation is a win-win for everyone, because it means we won´t be going to war and Syria will no longer be able to use chemical weapons. I think for once Russia comes out smelling like a rose, and they deserve to!
