An Indian court today deferred until Friday the sentencing of four men convicted of the brutal rape and murder of a paramedic intern on a moving bus in New Delhi on the night of Dec. 16.
Judge Yogesh Khanna heard arguments throughout Wednesday while the four stood at the back of the court in t-shirts, displaying no outward signs of remorse. Public prosecutor Dayan Krishnan demanded the death penalty for their “diabolical” acts.
On Dec. 16, the victim was on her way back home from watching a movie with a male friend when the men lured them onto a private bus where they repeatedly raped and tortured her with an iron rod. Krishnan called it an “extreme case of depravity.”
Defense lawyers argued for leniency even as cries demanding the men hang for their crimes grew louder outside the courtroom.
