Kerry Rejects Assad’s Timetable for Dismantling Chemical Weapons

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry is rejecting Syria’s proposed timeline to hand over its chemical weapons, saying the country’s own assurances that it would follow a 30-day lead time “are simply not enough,” the Associated Press reports.

Syrian President Bashar Assad told Russian TV earlier Thursday that the country would sign an international treaty banning chemical weapons according to a Russian-backed plan and begin transferring control of its own arsenal thirty days later. A spokesperson for the United Nations told CNN that Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has received a letter from Syria declaring its intention to join the convention.

Kerry said at the press conference in Geneva with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov that the U.S. would still strike Syria if Assad doesn’t agree to dismantle his chemical arsenal properly.

Assad told Russia’s Rossiya-24 TV that the country agreed to hand over its chemical weapons as a result of a Russian initiative—and not in response to the threat of a U.S. strike.

“Syria is placing its chemical weapons under international control because of Russia. The U.S. threats did not influence the decision,” Assad said, according to the BBC.

If we didn't step up, Russia would have never gotten involved, other than their involvement of supplying weapons to Assad.

Even Im an American and would have to agree with you Sunny . @Gs....if Obama is doing his best to avoid war then tell me why our Marine shock troops along with main battle tanks just deployed to Syria earlier this week ???

Ummm even I'm an American and I think that would be a stupid move on Assad's part because it would leave him vulnerable and I dont believe it was Assad who gas his own people , it was the rebels who did it . Just my opinion though .

Why Kerry is in a hurry? Did not the rebels use chemical weapons? There will be genocide of Christians, if the rebels come to power in Syria. Already, Christians have suffered terrible persecution in rebel-controlled areas, with countless reports of murder, rape, and extortion. Under its new Sunni rulers, minorities would likely face a fate like that in neighboring Iraq, where the Christian share of population fell from 8 percent in the 1980s to perhaps 1 percent today.  In Iraq, though, persecuted believers had a place to which they could escape, namely Syria. Where would Syrian refugees go?      So here is the nightmare. If the U.S., France, and some miscellaneous allies strike at the regime, they could conceivably so weaken it that it would collapse. Out of the ruins would emerge a radically anti-Western regime, which wuld kill or expel several million Christians and Alwarites.. Assad is an Alwarite and he is very friendly with Christians. Alwarites celebrate Christmas. Obama being pro- Muslim brotherhood in Egypt  may favor rebel rule in Syria. In recent riots Muslim Brotherhood activists burnt Christian churches, schools and killed Christians. Syrian rebels will also do the same crime with arms supplied by the Obama administration.. So here is the puzzle. Is it wise to support the fanatical rebels?

My understanding is the US is about to hit your debt ceiling in October and well Obama wants something to hide that to the back pages and you'll need a reason to raise it. Secondly Russia has an $8b contract with Assad for weapons and like any relationship that'll lead to a $30b over the lifetime. So if Russia backs one player in the game the US has to back the other because well there's a lot of good money at stake here and that'll take the heat off the Chinese taxman.

Kerry is such a phony. When he threw away his medals and compared US troops to gengis khan they were not even his medals! He was controlled opposition, working for the same masters of war as he does now.

If by diplomatic you mean making sure his ally, Assad, wins the civil war, than yes he was very successful at his 'diplomacy'. If you mean solving the problem with diplomacy, I think maybe look into Russia's role in all this a little deeper.

SANTIAGO,DR—All nations are equal a matter of sovereignty though we live in a community organized under a United Nations Chapter in order to promote order and conciliation among the several members. The UN Security Council established to arbiter when disputes break-out between nations—the peace counselor we should trust. If important resolutions are vetoed by ‘Permanent Members’ gathered impetus fall into a stalemate—nothing gets done. Another point of interest is that we seem to be opening a sinister curtain not human being wanted to play with: “The Cold War.” Enabling powerful nations to interfere upon other political motivation unilaterally never seeing through legitimate scope though allowing civil war to destroy the institution of government [Syria]causing genocide among its own people unacceptable—never mind the use of chemical weapons.

The only dumb comment was you calling Russia communist. Listen in school. It's a more market-based economy than it used to be. And actually, Dagmar, I voted for Obama a second time. Just because I disagree with how he has handled this doesn't mean I don't like him overall as a president.
