Insurgents attacked the U.S. consulate in Western Afghanistan’s largest city with a “complex” operation according to a U.S. embassy spokesperson. The  attack highlighted the continued security concerns as Afghanistan prepares to take over from international forces.

The attack in Herat, quickly claimed by the Taliban, left at least four people dead according to the Associated Press, including an interpreter and three Afghan security force members. The spokesperson for the embassy in Kabul told Reuters all U.S. personnel were safe and accounted for.

The insurgents drove up to the front gate Friday morning and exchanged fire with Afghan guards and security contractors before blowing up the explosive-laden truck.
