The Race to Be India’s Next Prime Minister Is Narendra Modi’s to Lose

From left: Gujarat state Chief Minister Narendra Modi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President Rajnath Singh, in New Delhi, on Sept. 13, 2013.

Election season took off in India today, as television cameras tracked the vehicle of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi from the New Delhi airport to a board meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the capital. By evening, the long-anticipated deed was done: The divisive and charismatic Modi had been chosen by the nation’s main opposition party as their official prime ministerial candidate. Despite fierce objections within the BJP’s upper ranks, party president Rajnath Singh named the chief minister of the western Indian state to helm the party’s push toward national elections scheduled next year— and kicked the ball squarely into the ruling Congress Party’s court.

In some ways, this wasn’t the biggest news of the day in India. In the hours leading up to the announcement, the long-awaited verdict came down in the infamous Delhi rape case, with all four men found guilty sentenced to death. India’s Twittersphere exploded with a spasm of angst over violence against women and capital punishment in India, where the death penalty is reserved for the “rarest of the rare” cases.

A few short years ago, Modi’s ascension to the top political circles in the world’s largest democracy would have caused its own social media furor. The ambitious politician, though never convicted, has never been able to shake allegations that he failed to intervene in anti-Muslim riots that erupted in Gujarat on his watch in 2002. As many as 1000 Muslims were killed in days of violence that gripped the state, and for several years after, critics who blamed Modi for inflaming the rioters felt reasonably assured that he could never be considered a viable candidate for prime minister in a nation where over 13% of the population is Muslim. In 2005, he was denied a visa to the U.S., and he has has not visited the country since.

But at home, as the skilled politician built up accolades for the efficient management and relative prosperity of Gujarat, voters have kept him in power, and BJP leaders have embraced him as the best chance for the party in 2014. Many Modi detractors have watched in disbelief as support for him has risen; in one recent poll, he was preferred as the next leader of the nation over Congress political scion Rahul Gandhi, with 19% of respondents saying they would choose Modi as PM and only 12% saying the same for Gandhi.

How Modi’s divisive persona will play out amongst voters over the next year is far from clear. Internally, Modi’s top-down leadership style has come under scrutiny as a potential liability in India’s often-fragile coalition politics. ‘NaMo’ has also created a rift in his own party. Veteran BJP operator L.K. Advani, who reportedly harbors his own prime ministerial ambitions, has refused to give his consent to his junior’s promotion, raising objections that the controversy surrounding the candidate will draw votes away from the party in key states. In a show of protest, Advani did not attend the meeting in Delhi on Friday. “I promise that in the 2014 election, the BJP will emerge victorious,” Modi told reporters after the meeting. “The party will work hard and we will leave no stone unturned.”

If Modi does hurt the BJP as the chosen frontrunner, the party may squander an opportunity handed to them by an embattled Congress-led government. In a July poll conducted by CNN-IBN-The Hindu, only 38% of India’s urbanites were satisfied with the government’s performance, down from 49% in 2011. A loss of confidence in India’s economic miracle and the stench of scandal that has clung to the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) coalition in its second term has opened the door wide for the opposition to make its case to voters in the world’s largest democracy that it’s time for a changing of the guard.

The Congress Party has been trying to shore up support, taking a series of decisive steps to get the economy back on track and successfully pushing through new laws that will appeal to its own vote base, including bills that provide more food support to poor families and firmly support farmers’ land rights against big development.

But with Modi front and center, the party will need to do much more — including anoint its own frontrunner to explain to 1.2 billion Indians why Congress is still the right choice for the country. Rahul Gandhi, the son of Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi, is in a natural position to take on the job. But he has not shown any particular zeal for the role, and it is unclear when and if he will ever willingly step forward. One thing is certain: If Congress doesn’t find somebody for the job soon, they risk letting the next few months shape up to be a one-man race.

What happened a decade earlier in Gujrath state is a historical tragedy.More so is the role of controversial Gujrathi leader Modi. One should know ,why majority opinion is not in favour of this politician and why not any leader of same party BJP ? The climex is if Modi realise this and tender public apology to minorities, he will be benefited. Unfortunately, Modi's thinking is somewhere not identical with humanity. How can one expect natural feelings of a human being if that person has not remain faithful to himself. This is true for Modi.Ask his deserted wife, who was never accepted by Modi in life and wandering somewhere in Gujarat region making a living our of teaching children of different faith.

As an Indian he has right to be our PM.But he should accept his mistakes publically.

If any one has got the scene in India totally wrong, then this writer takes the cake. Has this writer moved around the grass roots levels? Or for that matter has the writer any idea of the colossal cavalcade of GIGANTIC SCAMS and CORRUPTION indulged in brazenly by the ruling dispensation? Or has the writer taken a across-the- board Development Assessment of India for the National Financial Outlay available. Has the writer assessed State wise overall growth prospects-and how Narendra Modi has been the architect of ADVANCED GUJARAT-with European Countries, US and British & Chinese Delegations visiting Gujarat and meeting Mr.Modi Chief Minister over his progressive and beneficial governance over 3 electoral terms with landslide victories every time?

Has the writer seen the public clamour for Narendra Modi WITHOUT ANY PUBLICITY that compelled BJP to anoint him as PM Candidate for 2014 National Elections, and the over million strong vociferously supporting audience that hangs on to every word of Modi spoken enthralled in silence and responding with roars to his typical Audience-involvement-participation queries and assertions addressed to them?  Simultaneously the meager audiences of around 5000-15000 heads at Congress Election Rallies of even Sonia Gandhi + lesser at Rahul Gandhi's rallies necessitating the Speakers to plead and placate and cajole the leaving audience to stay on a little longer-has this writer not seen TV Channels and mainline Newspapers on this score? Astounding reportage by your Krista Mahr apparently alien to REALITY in India.

NO. This writer prefers to sit in the high castle and top of towers like NERO  Fiddling with HIS Word-Fiddle transported into a self-constructed and self-construed notes of tunes to his figment of imagination. He has intelligently or unintelligently skirted realities in concocting and presenting a picture of missing realism + facts + uneducated compilation + or maybe indulgently  relied on placating influential source to present an Electorally convenient picture, maybe with inducements. Other wise this writer simply ignores the devastated state of Indian economy with present governance...Re:$  skyrocketing from 44 barely ayear ago to 69  a month ago and now mounting from mid-  stable slot of 60 to 62.45  at moment of writing to 70 again soon.

Either this writer takes the cake for spewing out garbage or all the EURO, UK, US,CHINA and many other Governing Delegates & Industrial Teams are FOOLS OF THE ACE ORDER. The public mood all over the Country is swelling larger and larger day by day with the blasphemies created at every odd step and every odd day irritating annoying and angering the people of India all over, literally handing over reign to BJP and NARENDRA MODI.

The present dispensation is seriously and intensely afflicted by MODIPHOBIA....MODI-ITIS...MODINGITIS...MODIMANIA...

Modi's only aim is to be PM of India by wooing younger generation who knows nothing

about India's Economy, Foreign Policy, Employement etc etc. Modi in his rally mainly criticise

Sonia Gandhi, Rahul , Manmohan Singh with same words most of his repeated styling hand raiksing

in the loudest voice to collect huge amount clappings and hooting from innocent people.  Modi Modi Modi....

He has no correct figures of the  past and geography. If he starts speaking Policy matters towards the progress of

Nation in low tone attendance of audiance will come down a lot more that he can not tolerate. He has to capture

Gaddi of Delhi by hook or crook. He has lest interest on Policy matter of whole country. If Modi has done lot of good work in

Gujrat, it does not mean whole country has automatically start flourishing. If accidently Congress re capture power,

though they must not, they may  bring back to sutable situation. For BJP it would be very difficult.

Dear all Indians!

Being a true nationalist, I don't like our nation is ruled by Mr. Modii. I am also not in favor of Congress who has ruined our nation in almost all front. I would like to appeal top BJP leaders  to bring a person who is acceptable to all.  Only unity among us can uplift our nation forward. Divisive politics of Mr. Modi is not in the interest of the nation.  I appeal my Hindu Brothers to accomodate us respectfully in their fold. Divide & Rule politics was of Britishers and it should not be practiced by us. After all we - Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, Jains & Budhists are child of the same nation.

I quote from Ur article above,  "Rahul Gandhi, the son of Congress Party leader Sonia Gandhi, is in a natural position to take on the job.".  What 'natural positon' are U guys talking about may I ask?  He's a Half-Italian Prince of a Dynasty which the Indian National Congress Leaders of today's generation are obsessed with.

Leaders like Motilal Nehru and Jawaharlal Nehru were great Indian Freedom-Fighters and Leaders.  In spite of all controversies and certain mistakes Mrs.Indira Gandhi has always been a great Prime Mnister of India.

This NEW Gandhi-Dynasty is nothing like the old one.

The bias of the 'journalist' is evident from the second sentence ...."The divisive and charismatic Modi....". No reason to read any further. How the the rest of the article goes is obvious. The writer brings an uninformed bias to this piece. And to end with Rahul Gandhi being the natural choice to be the next PM. How do you figure that? No explanation given. This is so ignorant and misinformed. Another paid 'journalist'. Shame on you Krista. Utter shame.

Hi, I don't support Modi. I don't get a contract or a sub-contract or a sub-sub-contract to pay a road or build a bridge or a highway or even a culvert.

He says everything should be made online. Then how will we get bribes?? How will India prosper???? All the time he talks about transparency, decentralization of power, . empowering the people, bridging the gap between government bureaucracy and common man. If it happens, then who will loot India.

Already my mother made me the unofficial prime minister. Now I should steer the looting process of India. For that I need all of Your support. You poor people, see my name GANDHI. vote for me and help me in looting the nation.

Me and my Mother are on a mission. We want to loot India and move everything back to Italy. One motto. one mission. loot India.

So poor people vote for me and  I will assure You that i shall make Your future suck.

Jai Italy. Jai Gandhi. Jai foolish & stupid people of India.

Stop indulging in this scaremongering. Modi has been given a clean chit by supreme court. If you do not trust India's highest court, it is better if you choose some other country for your residence. Also read about 1969 riots in Gujarat or 1984 Anti Sikh riots when Congress was ruling. Congress is also responsible for partition of India along with Muslim league in 1947 when millions of innocent Indians were killed. If you still want to vote congress, then you are biased.

See, my strong opinion is that one should rate a man on account of his work. ..

Modi, a powerful personality, had changed the picture of Gujarat. The development is fabulous and even the natural environment is checked from exploitation, the state is beautiful. He made Gujarat debt-free. People are wealthy and happy...!!Even the people are safe, no riot ever happened there since 2002..!! Even when the opposition has tried all there effort for putting allegations, CBI has investigated for more than a decade...nothing happened..he came out of the allegations proven innocnent..!!

See, anyone can accuse anybody for anything...!! that does not prove the crime..!!!

Modi has transformed the picture of Gujarat, and that shows he can do that even in the whole country...he is a "Man Of Vision"...I think these reasons are enough for a real Indian to vote him..

All these all hacks, loin clothes, white cap waering old and out of touch leaders, including, manipulative Mody should be confined to dustbin of history.  None of the current politicians are clean and some of them have blood on their hands.

We need mordern generation of enterprising and forward looking citizens to take over from old corrupt politicians who are only interested in their self preservation.  We need people who are not tainted with any vices.  This kind of apathy and inaction by young folks not to go in politics for reasond mentioned above is a hurdle to democratic principles.

Unfortunately, corruption and vote buying exists in West as well.  Look at US, amount of money poured into fighting elections tantmounts to buying votes.

Further, no one says that all Hindus are communal. If that would have been the case, India would not have been a civilized land. DKUMA, like you and only 2% yours gurus and babas and RSS goons are hardcore communal, and they are the real trouble makers. They are dividing India and Indians and impose their communal agendas only to get power. Now, they got Modi as their leader, soon Center Cabinet will be full of the saffron goons.

What decisive steps would these be ? the ruling congress party has been portraying a Socialist/leftist agenda, and has been banking on vote bank politics to stay in power. The bills including Food security, land acquisition etc are solely aimed towards the same, and are widely viewed as populist and non-progressive.

The reason this nation finds itself off tracked from the once high rate of growth is similar.

@m_idrish The road to his office in Gandhinagar, a smooth, featureless four-lane highway, held the first one: Modi ordered the demolition of about 120 small Hindu shrines to make room for it, despite vehement objections from his Hindu nationalist allies. Modi may be portrayed as an ideologue, but he is more complicated than that. “He’s the only leader in the country who would be able to destroy a temple and get away with it, and still be called acceptable in Hindu politics,” says Tridip Suhrud, a social scientist based in Ahmedabad.

@MousanAli The name of the writer explains his comments. These words "plurality", "peace", 'harmony", 'unity", "divisive leader' doesn't fit the name of the writer whose ancestors divided this really plural country into a so called secular (read- vote bank oriented, minority appeasing) India and the Islamic states of Pakistan and Bangladesh. In 1951 Hindus constituted 22% of the population of undivided Pakistan (including today's Bangladesh) and due to magnanimity of the brethren of the writer the Hindi population has now dwindled to 1.7% in Pakistan and 9.2 % in Bangladesh. So this writer should ponder over their history before sermonising about these lofty ideals of humanity mentioned by him as a camouflage for the word 'hatred'. He should begin charity at home. The patriotic Indians now have to seriously decide who is best suited to rule them.

@MousanAliDo you know muslims are not more than a vote bank in Congress regime. I want to tell you true story. I use to live in Jamshedpur famous for beautiful city also famous for riots. My neighbor "Kasim Chacha" like a family for me. Year 1979 there was big riots more than 300 people died I was 9 year old and went to play with his son Hamid he was my best friend but Kasim Chacha said run away never come to my house or I will kill you. I was shocked. Year passes I try to find out what happened why my family tear a part I found out That was congress sponsored riots. 1977 on JP wave Janta Party won from Jamshedpur. To get back Jamshedpur parliament seat Congress Party ruin one of the most cultural diversified and beautiful cosmopolitan city. Now the gap is so wide we still not talk each other. One bitter truth there is a so called mini Pakistan surrounded by Hindustan in Jamshedpur. People still live in fear. Every political party exploit this city for their own benefits. They keep reminding them muslims are minority weak and different from "Hindustani". Just visit Jamshedpur and Naroda Patia than say who is divisive.

@MousanAli The congress has been hurting plurality for years. It is the congress that has been divisive. They are the ones who keep talking about hindus and muslim. Modi only talks about Gujaratis or Indians..

Bluebird_747
Bluebird_747

@MousanAli Are you repeating what has been taught to you or doing any of your own independent thinking?  Let's see who is divisive - a leader that believes in development for all and appeasement of none OR a leader that has putting claim to Muslim  votes since independence, with that community where it was 65 years ago?  Muslims in Gujarat has progressed more in past 10 years than in previous 55 years.   There are ZERO riots in Gujarat since 2002, whereas almost 100+ riots in UP since Akhilesh came to power and over 200 Major riots in Congress ruled states since independence !  When you sit down and do you own thinking, you will come to a realization of who is divisive and who truly secular.

Bluebird_747
Bluebird_747

@RPrasad No, it does not prove anything.  It only proves that supporters of BJP have not organized themselves to be effective globally.   What have you done to ensure that the group gets organized, and reach out to the media as a group - probably none.  Muslim groups are highly organized and financed, but secular Hindus are always divided and not organized to influence opinion makers.  Need to do something towards that goal.

@firmsoil 'Natural position', what do you think this is, a Maharaja's kingdom?  This one family 'Bhakti' has to stop, if India is ever to come out of downward spiral.  Ever since Independence, there is only one family taking control of India (eliminating contributions of 1,000's of Indians, including, Sardar Patel, Lal Bahadur Shashtri, amongst others).

With Modi nominated for PM candidate, Congress is rattled that their supremacy will be challenged by a person, who is extremely backward class, and grew up selling tea on trains !

@JohnDahodi Read the history of RSS. Separate the facts from the allegations. Also get transcripts of every modi speech. Also compare the Gujarat riots to every major riot in India before that. It was contained faster than any of them. And this is the first decade in centuries when Gujarat has seen no communal violence. And then talk about facts.

Nobody has been more divisive than people calling modi divisive.

Bluebird_747
Bluebird_747

@JohnDahodi Wow !  Name calling.  Usually, people do that when they do not have any intelligent arguments.

Quite wild accusations, but one thing you mentioned right - there are bad apples in every community, including Hindus and Muslims.  Like every Muslim is not a terrorist, every Swami is not a dhongi baba.  Extreme right wing elements of VHP / RSS supported Keshubhai (GPP) in Gujarat, against Modi in last elections.  This was because Modi does not tolerate these extreme elements, just like most muslims do not tolerate Taliban.  So, refrain from wild allegations just because you are frustrated.  Think logically.

@SameerDesai @JohnDahodi

Mr. Desai; I did study RSS and the India riots since 1940 and found out the truth as follows:

(i) RSS and the Sangh Parivar including the leaders of VHP ; except Vir Sawarker did not take part in our independent movement. They were busy of working with the British government to establish Hindu Raj at any cost; even one of the icon leaders of BJP/RSS was alleged to be witness to hang one of our freedom fighters. Including Advaniji did not go to jail for a day but he was busy to solidify  RSS in Sindh and played in the hands of British Raj. Even our Father of the nation; Gandhiji was killed by the member of RSS and he was trained by that group. The worst, Sardar Patel had put ban on RSS and several leaders were sent to jail.

(ii) Regarding the riots, I have researched many of them, read the inquiry commissions reports and found out that most of them were initiated by the Hindu communal related to the Sangh Parivar, and in almost all the riots, Muslim minority suffered the heavy loss of lives and properties.   Many riots were initiated by Hindus on petty matters like death to cow, rap of Hindu girl, fight between two kids and so on.

If you are really an Indian; you should be worry of N. Modi, who has dedicated  his life for  RSS and dreaming to impose RSS dictate on India will surely polarized Indians in to several small groups and very soon, India will be wiped out and there will be several Hindu States rule by Swamis, Gurus, Babas, Bapus and Sadhvis. Please note that in Modi's cabinets, many cabinet ministers will be from hard core Hindu RSS, and no one will dare to ask them anything. Many like Asharam, Shri Shri .. and Baba Ramdev will be our biggest industrialists.

Sir, you are really kidding and fooling yourself giving rosy picture of RSS and Sangh Parivar. This Organization was established not in 1947 and not to resolve partition problems but the partition problems were created by this very organization and in the end killed more than a million human beings and destroyed their lives. Millions more have been displaced and even after 65 years, the two communities are still divided.

@JohnDahodi @SameerDesai

This comment is from a person who studied RSS in very close proximity without BIAS. The reason it was started which no one knows is to Build CHARACTER, SACRIFICE among the YOUNG Indians immediately after 1947 as the entire Country was doused in communal riots all over. The character means leave self out of every thing and start looking at others and see how you can help them with your abilities. The second sacrifice means not KILLING your self, but be READY to offer your life if the cause demands so as to save the poor and helpless.

The rest you hear is nothing but twisted versions for political gains by generations of Congress Men and women. The wise and old gaurd were thrown out of Congress and what is left is sorry to say SCUM of politics and it is risky to hear and follow them because they are not serious what they are talking about, it is just to consolidate their positions leaving the rest to winds.

Do not believe what you see, hear and we all including me have MIND it is your own and USE it and follow it and sure you will succeed and prosper.

I am blessed when was a small kid of 7 yrs when Mahatma Gandhi came to our place in southern India called GUNTUR and he touched my head and I am not even aware who he is except hearing his name in papers. I worked with Mr. Gandhi's contemporaries in Great Britan, I mean London with Swaraj Party one person I can remember Chandra Sekhar Vedak who was follower of Mr. Gandhi and he lived after retirement from Politics he settled in US and passed away. His wife brough tup all seven children educated them and send them to Us for prosperity. she never paused one second for her self, most of the time helping helpless and poor in Bombay Maharashtra. You read this and you will understand what it means to help others and the joy you will get when you see how the people you helped are prospering. That happiness and satisfaction is your STRENGTH that PROPEL you with strength to do more.
