The Syrian opposition has chosen a provisional prime minister who will take on the job of regaining order to areas no longer controlled by President Bashar Assad.
Coalition members shared the news with Reuters on Saturday, the same day U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced a joint deal with Russia that would eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile and table the threat of a U.S. military strike for now.
The Syrian National Coalition chose moderate Islamist Ahmad Tumeh, a former political prisoner from the eastern province of Deir al-Zor. He told Reuters the priority of his government will be “to restore stability in the liberated areas, improve their living conditions and provide security.”
