U.S. and Russia Reach Deal over Syria Weapons

In a joint news conference with his Russian counterpart Saturday, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced a deal has been reached that would eliminate Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile and table the threat of a U.S. military strike for now.

The steps of that deal, which Kerry announced with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, call for Syria providing a full accounting of its chemical weapons arsenal within a week and the full destruction of that arsenal within a year. U.N. inspectors would be allowed in the country by no later than November.

Kerry warned that if Syria does not comply with the terms of the deal, a U.N. Security Council resolution could be drawn up that includes the threat of force.

“There can be no games,” Kerry said.

Putin, if you want credit then you are responsible for guaranteeing that your client state Syria fully complies with the agreement.

If you can't trust Putin who can you trust? The Syrians need more time to hide their chemical weapons anyway.

What a crock. The gas more than likely came from Russia in the first place. This is all a tactic by Putin to keep Assad in power.

This is a very encouraging development.  It's a win-win-win-win.  Win for the U.S. - Win for Russia - Win for Syria & win for the region.

Now, let's see them actually pull it off.  Trust but verify!

This is really a disaster for conservatives who love bashing Obama.  First stage for them will be doubting this agreement will ever work, next stage will be denying any credit for Obama at all, last stage will be to obscure these events and try to move on to some new criticism.

@TIME @TIMEWorld is it just me or is this headline demeaning to the people of Syria? The two nations who have fuelled arms race in region.

@j45ashton Obama did not handle the situation well at all.  He was subject to the whims of the media and the rapidly changing developments.  Putin, on the other hand, played this international crisis masterfully.  Never mind is dismissive attitude toward proof of the use of chemical agents and his lies about who used them.  All in all he came out on top.  Our saving grace was this agreement.  Now the ball is in Russia's court.

@AlphaJuliette @j45ashton Rightwing baloney.  Obama is so much craftier, wilier & steadfast than you righties realize, by the end of his admin, historians looking back will see his admin as transforming.   As Martha Radatz observed on Washington Week, Syria was going to be struck not matter what and only two people really knew it...Assad & Putin.  And that's what drove this bargain.  Because if the tide turned in the civil war, the rebels might get the chemical weapons and those weapons in the hands of Chechen rebels meant big trouble for Putin.   Remember the old joke about what's one white man among  ten black men?  It died after Warren Moon became a great quarterback  Transformed the NFL.  Better get used to it.
