A Spanish court has agreed to try China’s former President Hu Jintao on charges of genocide. A group of Tibetan activists brought the charges before the court, which claims universal jurisdiction over crimes against humanity involving a Spanish victim.
As a former Communist Party Secretary of the Tibet Autonomous Region, Hu Jintao oversaw a crackdown on Tibetan protesters and rioters in 1989. Journalists were expelled from the region and the number of dead remains unknown.
