Youths slide down a huge water slide at a public swimming pool in Kabul October 4, 2013.

The men of Kabul have found a way to splash around without having to look at women in bathing suits.

A new $5 million all-male water park has a pool, water slides, and a wave pool, right in the center of Kabul, Reuters reports. Visitors have to pass armed guards and a body search at the door, but after that can play to their heart’s content.

Men can bring female children to the park, as long as they’re under 10 years old. A separate area is set aside where boys and girls can swim together.

I think that we should not look in terms of a water tank facility for men, rather culture and development ,as an anthropologist i would also like to say that we do not point at others when we see a different perspective. Respect and be respected, further there are many things that we see different from our own culture, but we should also remember that when development takes place and men and women become part of it and they owe it then the perspective is different. In Pakistan as compared to Kabul, women from Afghanistan are mostly involved in prostitution ,in Islamabad, what i see around, and if we look from the Afghans perspective these women would be killed for doing so, but a place where they saw that there is no strictness, they found prostitution to be an easy way of earning. So i am sure that a time will come when they too will avail this water tank facility. Looking at the western culture and the role of women, one can say that it was not so from the beginning, so lets give them the space which others have availed, and having a water tank is a perspective from a Western side. No need to weigh them through such gestures. They will flourish once there is no war in the country and it moves on like other developed countries. Give them their right to live, and they may gradually have many more facilities.

In a primitive culture that thinks of women as property, why would they think to create a water park for women? Why would that even cross a male's mind? Islam allows adult men to marry children, abuse them, and bury them up to their armpits and stone them to death. A water park? Don't be absurd.

Oppression is a practice. Oppression of anyone offends all of humanity. It is an action that assaults the dignity and liberty of a person. The fact that oppression wrongfully violates a person is a human principle. Male dominated cultures use oppression to control women and yet get all the benifits of the culture,.

@stacy - i share your perspective and i am also on your side in that case. It was not my intention to attack or offend you. I appreciate you for being open and honest. I get upset and furious when i read comments from people who are claiming to be more civilized but their comments reflect the opposite. The people of Afghanistan is suffering for decades because of the struggle for power between major states like USA and others. Our liberty and freedom has been snatched away from us, our children and women are being oppressed on a daily basis. Children are becoming slaves of this new free capitalism market that creates division of classes and increases poverty and inequality. Most of the comments have an unbelieveable dehumanizing nature. The level of ignorance is higher than i expected from the people living in their so called civilized nation.

No doubt they will be elated you see they don't get to take a shower or a bath while they are in the mountains planning rape genocide murder lot plunder mayhem with a twisted sense of religion.... Hmmm waiting....

Jon Mutter, I am in no way materialistic, I just believe in a fair go for all... I would not benefit in anyway by the women of Kabul gaining access to a water park. I am a student at University (so are not overpaid). However, through my I studies have become aware of just how unfairly women are treated. I am not a feminist but believe in having a world where people are not discriminated against weather that be gender, ethnicity, health or other. I believe that if women would like to go to a water park then they should be able to... I have no problems with traditions or culture and do not try to dictate or change how a culture operates.. But as a person (forgetting race, gender, age, health) if someone wants to cool off at a water park why should they be excluded? It is not as if they want to swim in their birthday suit. I am sure they would cover up according to their custom.... What makes me sad is that gender bias is alive and well in our society weather it is Western Society or other societies. For anyone who would question this statement I would recommend a paper written by Mamonah Ambreen and Anwaar Mohyuddin Titled: Gender Biased Parental Attitudes Towards Education: A Case Study of Village Dasuah, District Faisalabad. It is a short Journal Article published in "Academic Research International". This article just gives a brief snapshot as how women are marginalised, oppressed and treated in their society. I came across this article in my research and thought it quite insightful. When I wrote the above comment it was not meant to ignite an argument but purely to state a fact that for too long people have been marginalised. Why should people be put in boxes or excluded on the basis of some physical attribute or lack of? Why not have a world that is fair and free of division, where we try to get along together in harmony....

Of course not. It would be a public place and the women in Islam are afforded few places in public where they can act like real humans.

over fed over paid? wtf are you are talking about you clown. are you saying the oppression of women in the middle east is okay? while i do not condone going into countries and changing them into what i guess only us "materialistic westerners" think is ideal do you not think women should have equal rights?

It still amazes me to hear people say we should not impose our Western views on other cultures. This is a common sense principal; but, what about the actual question: is oppression acceptable? I do not wish to impose my views upon any culture, nor do I wish to offend another for their culture. Still, oppression is NOT a view, it is a practice. Oppression of anyone offends all of humanity. Oppression is NOT a view, it is an action that assaults the dignity and liberty of a person. The simple fact that oppression wrongfully violates a person is NOT a Western view, it is a human principle.

Half the fun of being at a water park is the half naked chicks walking around. This is just... I mean WTF, guys? How is this allowed?

That is really disrespectful. Why can't you just appreciate a moment of joy after your former President (from your STATE) went there to drop bombs on these innocent people? Now when they finally have a moment of peace. Why bother? Pessimist people like you don't want to see a little bit of joy and happiness upon the faces of Afghan people. It is clear that Afghanistan is an Islamic state where it is common to have segregated places. We see that in the Jewish communities, in the orthodox christian communities. Amish communities and so on... So please stop making ridicule of a nation or a city that has already suffered a lot by your government. Thank you

Interesting. Who built the water slide? How long before someone tries to launch a terrorist attack against it? If the government built it, why not spend the money on infrastructure, such as education and health care? Sexism is just not tolerable in this day and age. While I am not a racist, this attitude towards women frightens me, and I could never get along with someone who feels that someone else is naturally inferior to them!

Since when is it America's job to provide education to Afghanistan? That's the philosophy of a leech right there. No, the US went to Afghanistan because the men the government armed attacked New York. Or has it been that long that we've forgotten about this?

@Michael Schumann women are not considered human except when it comes to procreation. Otherwise, they are considered property, like cattle or goats.
