French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius has summoned the U.S. ambassador for “immediate” discussions regarding recent newspaper claims that the National Security Agency (NSA) has spied on millions of phone calls in France, BBC reports.

In an article on Monday, Le Monde said that between December 10 last year and January 8, the NSA intercepted 70.3 million phone calls in France, involving terrorist suspects, but also businesses and officials. The information, based on documents leaked by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden, did not say whether the calls were recorded or if the operation was still ongoing.
