Catholic groups are urging the faithful to respond to a survey on hot-button family issues like same-sex marriage, divorce and contraception before the Vatican comes together to discuss them next year.

The Catholic Bishops’ Conference for England and Wales wrote in the Catholic Universe that Catholics should respond to the Vatican-composed questionnaire, the Catholic Herald reports. Archbishop Lorenzo Baldisseri, secretary general to the Vatican’s Synod of Bishops, previously asked bishops to distribute the survey “immediately as widely as possible.”

The survey, first sent out Oct. 18, asks questions like: “Describe how the Catholic Church’s teachings on the value of the family … is understood by people today?”

The Vatican synod on the “pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization” begins Oct. 5, 2014.
