Kenya’s chief justice ordered “immediate action” in a case where men accused of raping a 16-year-old girl were punished with cutting grass.

The girl, who is known as “Liz,” was allegedly beaten and raped by six men as she was returning from her grandfather’s funeral in June, then left bleeding and unconscious in a sewage ditch, Agence France-Presse reports.

The high-profile case sparked worldwide outcry, including a petition for justice signed by 1.3 million people, as well as a demonstration in Nairobi, where protestors wore T-shirts with the slogan “Justice for Liz” and hung women’s underwear on the local police station’s fence.

Kenya Chief Justice Willy Mutunga said Saturday that he had sent the case to the country’s judicial oversight body.
