Minority group likely fleeing persecution

Aid workers say only eight survivors have been rescued from a boat carrying at least 70 Muslim Rohingya, after it capsized off the western coast of Burma.

The wooden vessel was headed for Bangladesh when it broke apart four hours into its journey early Sunday, the Associated Press reports. It was unclear if any bodies had been recovered.

The incident underscores a larger problem with Muslim minorities fleeing Burma’s mostly Buddhist Rakhine state, which has suffered from sectarian violence and where Buddhist mobs chase Muslims down with machetes, iron chains, and bamboo clubs.
