The silhouette of an armed fighter of the Committees for the Protection of the Kurdish People (YPG) is seen as runs to take position along the front line on October 16, 2013 in the Syrian town of Ras al-Ain, close to the Turkish border.

An explosion in a central Damascus square left eight dead and at least 50 wounded on Wednesday.

Women, children and maintenance workers at a railway office building were among the victims in Hijaz Square in the Syrian capital, the state-run Syrian Arab News Agency reports.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a pro-opposition group, cited conflicting reports of whether the explosion came from a bomb or a mortar shell.

More than 100,000 people have died in the two-and-a-half year civil war in Syria.
