Chinese authorities have arrested a man in connection with a series of explosions that killed one and injured several others in the country’s Shanxi province on Wednesday.

A local resident, who police found to be in possession of explosives, was arrested early Friday morning, BBC reports. Feng Zhijun has earlier convictions for theft and is said to have confessed to the crime.

The motive for Wednesday’s attack is still unclear; it occurred outside of a Communist Party office. Witnesses reported seeing “finger-length long nails” and “many iron balls” at the scene.
