Ousted Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi accused the military leader who deposed him of treason on Wednesday.

In a message read by his lawyers, Morsi, who remains in prison and on trial, sought to rally his supporters by leveling the treason charge at Defense Minister General Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the Associated Press reports. Morsi said stability cannot return to the country until “the military coup is eliminated and those responsible for shedding Egyptians’ blood are held accountable.”

Morsi’s message was the first since he was moved to to a regular prison last week. The first hearing of his trial, in which he stands charged with inciting murder, ended in chaos when Morsi declared: “I am Egypt’s legitimate president. I refuse to be tried by this court.”

The next hearing in the trial is Jan. 8.
