Why Indians and Pakistanis Find This Ad Incredibly Moving

Six decades have passed since the partition of India and Pakistan separated millions, but the memory of it is still excruciating for many on both sides of the border

Despite the tensions between the governments of India and Pakistan, this commercial, released by Google India on Wednesday, makes the point that the personal connections between Indians and Pakistanis run deep.

The story of the ad, entitled ‘Reunion’, begins in India, where an old man, Baldev, reminisces to his grand daughter Suman about his childhood friend Yousuf, with whom he lost touch after the India-Pakistan partition in 1947.

Suman uses a few key words from the grandfather’s story and connects the dots with the help of Google search. The old friends are united, and when they meet — staring at each other disbelievingly at the end of the video — the lingering pain of partition is captured in one fell swoop.

“Partitions divide countries, friendships find a way,” says the caption below the three-and-a-half minute commercial, which has already received more than 500,000 hits.

I am moved to tears. This is a great reason humanity should not be divided by politics or religion. Thumbs-up, Google.

it is wrong to think that india and Pakistan can reunion like German reunion : The difference is not based on a wall  the wall  of hate  really  a wall of isolation of great people so  it will not exist and it  should go :  so it is gone But  the issues between Hndu india  and Muslim  Pakistan is not a simple It made on religion  made by Muslims violently and it haunts generations and generations and  Hindus can not forget it easily the way Pakistan is made  and there is no  similarities between two religion Hindu and Muslim  so the  issue is a closed chapter  for ever :

@bansalMishra, @sunraise yes for people like you .. the communal old orthodox, the chapter is closed but ot for all. A warm welcome by the people of both nations to for this video shows that we have hope. And stop nonsense like Hindu and Muslim religions have no similarities... stop looking for differences... look for similarities and you will start to find many. Our greedy leaders played with us and created this wall of hatred but we and the coming generations will completely erase this wall... I believe so and many like me who want peace will believe so because this wall is destroying economy and peace and development of both the countries.

@B I really think people like you should consider assisted suicide. I can Google some formulas for you. No one with both a heart and a brain will miss you. The earth is getting too crowded as it is, and we can happily lose the rabid and stupid among us.

@shankarSarkar @B There's no need to be abusive about this Mr.Arvay's comment.  They are Americans, who want things between India and Pakistan to be alright.  But the fact remains that they are not that simple.  And the reality today is that the pre-partition connections are fading with the passage of time.  This might get 500,000 hits but the that's no big deal.

These kind of things happen in fiction on advertisements but the real tension between the two countries is much deep-rooted.

@BansalMishra And what do you mean by Hindu Muslim ? If you are an Indian then you know that India is not a Hindu or any X, Y, Z religiously tagged country ! Indian constitution clearly states that its a secular country and gives equal rights to people belonging to all religion. A Muslim, a Hindu a Sikh, a Catholic... every one is equal Indian...keep this in mind if you are an Indian.

@NandaKishoreN I knew Americans don't want it to be alright for weapon business ! But af least Indian and Pakistanis who want peace and development of their countries certainly want the hatred between us to be gone. I think a true enemy of India will want to maintain this hatred with Pakistan.

@NandaKishoreN 100 % agree to you, there is nothing common between a Hindu and Muslims. They are 2 separate people, eternal enemies.
