Two roadside bombs killed nine children in Afghanistan in separate incidents on Monday amid ongoing insurgent violence.

One bomb exploded beside a group of children playing in the street near their home in the eastern Paktika province, killing seven and wounding three others, the Associated Press reports. In Zabul province, in the south, a family was driving to the provincial capital to shop when their vehicle hit the bomb. Two children were killed, and the father and a third child were injured.
