Embattled Toronto Mayor Rob Ford is challenging local lawmakers to call for a special election instead of stripping him of most of his powers.

The disgraced mayor, under fire after he admitted smoking crack, said on the radio Monday morning that the city council’s plan to revoke many of his powers as mayor, which members will vote on Monday, is the wrong way to go.

“If they want me out they should just call a snap election,” Ford said on 640AM. “I’m willing to go to the polls right now.”

The mayor likened the situation to a “coup d’etat” and said council members areĀ “trampling on democracy.”

The council is set to vote on the motion shortly after noon.
