Talks between Syria’s government and the opposition will take place in Geneva early next year, just as the country’s bloody civil war nears its third year.

The United Nations announced on Monday that the talks will take place in Geneva on Jan. 22, the Associated Press reports. The U.N. called the Geneva conference “the vehicle for a peaceful transition that fulfills the legitimate aspirations of all the Syrian people for freedom and dignity, and which guarantees safety and protection to all communities in Syria.”

Previous efforts to initiate peace talks floundered because of disagreements over who would represent the Syrian opposition and what other countries will be involved. More than 100,000 people have died in the civil war.
