In one of India’s most highly awaited verdicts, the parents of Aarushi Talwar, a 14-year-old schoolgirl, have been found guilty of murdering her and their domestic helper.

Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, dentists in their late 40s from Noida — a satellite town around 20 kms from New Delhi — will be sentenced on Tuesday afternoon.

The double homicide has been notorious in India since 2008 and was widely seen as an honor killing by the parents infuriated at an alleged liaison between their daughter and Hemraj, the domestic helper.

“Parents are the best protectors of their own children. That is the order of human nature, but there have been freaks in the history of mankind where the father and mother became the killer of their own progeny,” the court in its 204-page judgment said.

The Talwars will challenge the verdict in a higher court.
