An American man detained in North Korea apologized for his actions during the Korean War, according to the country’s state-run news agency.

Merrill Newman, 85, has been held in North Korea for more than 30 days after attempting to board a flight from Pyongyang to Beijing. The Palo Alto, Calif. resident allegedly released a statement Sunday, according to KCNA.

“After I killed so many civilians and (North Korean) soldiers and destroyed strategic objects in the DPRK during the Korean War, I committed indelible offensive acts against the DPRK government and Korean people,” the Korean War veteran said.

Newman visited North Korea as a part of a tourist group in October, and then allegedly “perpetrated acts of infringing upon the dignity and sovereignty of the DPRK and slandering its socialist system.”

U.S. officials said they were “deeply concerned” about Newman and another detained American citizen. “Given Mr. Newman’s advanced age and health conditions, we urge (North Korea) to release Mr. Newman so he may return home and reunite with his family,” said a National Security Council spokesperson.

This is the first time Pyongyang has addressed its reason for holding Newman.

What a low life country to use an 85 year old man this way

It's Americans' turn to apologize for a fabricated war crime. Does the testimony include comfort women during the Korean War? On which side are the Secretary-General of the UN and the South Korean president going to be? It’s the time to realize their dishonesty.

If anyone can be useful in all of this , it is former New Mexico Governor Richardson.

I honestly feel for the veteran.  I hope he gets back to his family real soon.   But, when it comes to North Korea, don't expect a logical and sensible government.  How many times  have civilians traveled to that country, only to be stranded at the mercy of a dictatorial police state?   He should have known better.  Where was his family in all of this?

Thank you Dennis Rodman for your genius diplomacy efforts that force an 85 year old veteran to embarrass himself for serving his country.   Why don't you offer to exchange yourself for him and stop your offensive acts against the american people.

@Openminded1

you're really too fuc*king stupid to understand why he would want to visit? it's called closure, genius. being in the korean war was probably the single most difficult, defining period of his life. it's no different than ww2 vets returning to europe or japan or vietnam vets going back to vietnam for closure.  i get that you're whole shtick on here is being a caustic @$$hole, but could you at least to try use your brain a little bit?

@gripp13 wtf? Do you know what this guy did in the war or do know him personally? It not, perhaps you are too stupid to post on this site? What does Obama have to do with this incident?

@gripp13 Hey, hey, hey! This is an 85-year-old man who is in a difficult position. He is reading from a script and the film is obviously chopped up to suit their purposes. No matter what you think of him, he is still a fellow American who FOUGHT FOR HIS COUNTRY  in the Korean war. Don't judge until you have walked in his shoes. Give the man a chance to get home and explain what happened. Don't you think his prior service to his country affords him at least that?

@BobFlynn He probably visited to just see it, said something bad about the country during a tour and got arrested. Now he apologizes with their script so they'll let him go.

He was a dumb  for going there just like the other Americans that went there. Its not a f-ink tourist mecca. they hate the USA . You are the dummy. I am old too but not stupid enough to go there or any other place that is a danger to Americans.

@Brent-ChemistryGuy @BobFlynn untrue,

read about what he did before visiting. He went to visit as more of a cathartic trip to deal with the war.

The government of N Korea has no shame and this is blowing up in their face. No one believes that this statement was not coerced.
