Two helicopter crews have been stranded in Antarctica’s harsh terrain after one of the aircraft crashed leaving three members injured.

According to a report in AFP, the two helicopters were traveling in tandem when one unexpectedly went down on Sunday night after finishing a surveillance mission at a penguin colony. The accompanying chopper immediately landed and its crew is reportedly caring for their injured colleagues until help arrives.

“Because of the nature of the incident and the environment, their injuries are being treated as serious and awaiting further medical assessment,” the Australian government’s Antarctic Division told the AFP.

Rescuers are waiting for favorable weather in order to launch a recovery mission.
