Shanghai Officials Tell Children, Elderly to Stay Inside Due to Smog

Pollution warning issued a day after the 2013 Shanghai International Marathon

People wear masks while walking on a street during a hazy day in downtown Shanghai December 2, 2013.

The amount of air pollutants in China’s bustling commercial center of Shanghai were reportedly ten times higher on Monday than the level considered safe by the World Health Organization, leading officials to issue a warning telling the elderly and children to say indoors.

According to a report in Bloomberg, the official warning comes one day after 35,000 athletes participated in the annual Shanghai International Marathon. Some runners reportedly wore face-masks during the race, while others complained of lung pain after finishing the grueling event.

While China has been commended for decades of explosive growth that has pulled hundreds of millions out of poverty, experts warn that the government must address ongoing environmental damage caused by the country’s economic revival.

Do you agree that If Saddam Hussein had flooded the Kurdish villages with non-Kurds and ordered the Kurds to "assimilate" and "celebrate this diversity" and thereby demographically wiping out the Kurds as an ethnic group he WOULD have been GUILTY of committing an intentional act of genocide?

Isn`t that what you anti-Whites are doing to White people by flooding our communities with non-Whites and telling us we have to "assimilate" and "celebrate diversity"?

STOP WHITE GENOCIDE

"Anti-racist" is a codeword for ANTI-WHITE

but shanghai is also an economic success

i wish america was more like shanghai....i can tolerate waste, pollution and unbreathable air......whats scares me is over regulation by a rogue EPA...who expects everything to be clean

putting american companies at risk to protect trees and fish ARE YOU SERIOUS?

TREES AND FISH!!!!!

i cant wait till we get this tree huggin commie out of the white house and we ebolish the EPA.....Exxon Mobile has a team of scientists they know what they are doing

and dont need MAOBAMA breathing down their necks.....every spill we have ever had was cleaned up eventually and only messed up places where animals live

humans are perfectly safe! ....even if a spill happens in your neighborhood JUST MOVE!!!

America is so big...you can live in other places...is your neighborhood that important?

Maybe the capitalism governs all, since you can make a profit by selling better food, housing and transportation. But how do you make money by selling breathable air?

Did I get that right?

The ideas of pollution and "needing" to breathe are liberal propaganda.  If you have enough faith in the economy and pray hard enough, you can survive in a vacuum.

The smog has a dual impact on environment.

First, there are the hydrocarbons going to boost greenhouse gases.  Those contribute to global warming.

Seond, there are the aerosol particulate pollutants that can rise high into the atmosphere.  Those contribute to global dimming and reduce global warming while they are blocking solar energy from reaching the surface of the Earth.

Of course, the immediate effect is on the health of the population there.  The government does not have the interest in the health of the general population that the US federal government has.  Many may not recall the bad smog problems in California that pushed the emissions control regulations into effect.

Shanghai has nothing on Bakersfield, California. The pollution from this oil town makes the eyes water. It rises up the hill through Tehachapi and into the next valley to meet with the intense Los Angeles smog. The thousands of windmills that have been plunked all over the ridges appear flacid and useless as a solution to offset the gross pollution from either direction. The Americans are sure suckers for the words "renewable energy."

If Chinese government continues to allow high number of personal vehicles sitting in the daily traffic jams within high density urban areas, air pollution will only get much worse.

Some Chinese don't even benefit from owning a car since it takes much longer to get from point A to B through traffic jams and parking being superbly expensive. China has great public transportation within major cities. But people just have to show off.

Destiny is in our own hands.

Environmental damage to its own citizens and citizens of other countries is the last thing on the mind of the Totalitarian communists government of China...right up there no labor laws or regulations, taking organs from prisoners, manipulation of currency and other atrocities and human rights violations. It is reported that 25% of the pollutant particles falling on California is coming from our neighbor to the east. To think that nitwits are fighting, pushing, shoving, stabbing, and tasering each other to get their grubby hands on products at Walmart that are made in hellhole China while we put each other out of work is a sad sad statement as Americans.

good for China, pollution will kill half of their 1.5 billion population. one way to bring down the number of human species.

Yeah, I say good for America!!  Regulate every damn thing, and let China do whatever the hell it wants.  The US will tank into the toilet, but well, who cares, at least we're green, right?  Some of you people are complete idiots.

Suddenly tha EPA and all of those 'big government' regulations on polluting industries don't sound so bad.

@SilenceIsConsent Germany produces more electrical power from solar energy than the US and it has far smaller area.  Other sources of energy production are, over time, less expensive than petroleum energy sources while cost of energy production from hydrocarbon sources is non-decreasing trend.

@SilenceIsConsent cry me a river.. I guess you dont know about how china has no safety laws, pollutions laws. it may be polluted over at Bakersfield but at least they are struggling to work around the loops holes. They are still better off than china.

@highdef2012 Some people think shaving 5 years from people's life spans is a small price to pay for turning your country into a vast toxic waste dump with 8% GDP growth a year. Others thankfully disagree.

@highdef2012 As someone who grew up in the 1960's and 1970's, it seems to me that you are a young ignoramus that has absolutely no idea why your air, water and soil today are not causing emphysema, cancer or some other life-threatening malady.   What is truly sad, however, is that so many are willing to proudly trumpet their complete ignorance while calling others idiots.  I'll even wager a bet that instead of doing any kind of research or making any consideration about why virtually every industrialized country has eventually implemented regulations on businesses (US, Europe, Japan, Taiwan...), you'll simply spout more Libertarian nonsense and believe you know it all...

@highdef2012 This is actually what America wants, too.  Let other countries do the manufacturing so we don't get the pollution here.

@yetanotherjones    hey, Einstein.  Think again.  Cleaning up America and letting CHina pollute whatever the hell it wants WON"T clean up the air for anybody, moron.  Do you even think before you t ype??  Good God, epic epic fail!

@pullUpYourDamnPants Shanghai does not have major manufacturing facilities within the city. I believe most of the smog came from car emissions. The number of personal vehicles has exploded.  All the cars sit in traffic all day and all the days as people think taking public transportation is too embarassing.

@dboy4ever I agreed with you on this. I believe America wants us to become a managing country instead of manufacturing (not all of them). The cost of cleaning the environment is more than the cost of being taxed and feed a few heads. However, we have to take the backfire from the people that are abusing the system. I can go on, but I guess you get the drift.

@highdef2012  Did you even read the article?  The air is so polluted over there it is becoming unbreathable.  At times one cannot see beyond 30' because the smog is so bad.  I know this because I have been there.  All of this is due to no regulation on toxic emmisions from manufacturing processes.

Solipsist
Solipsist

@highdef2012 Yes.  If China fails to control the costs of production of goods because it increases use of hydrocarbon energy, then it will price itself out of the commercial market over time.  Walmart will begin seeking goods from competitors to China that are developing in other countries.

markguchen
markguchen

@highdef2012 Uh... YES.  They are already doing that.  Why do you think China outspent the US in renewables and green technology?  Sometimes these things can go hand-in-hand.  Google "waste for food", it'll open your mind.  I promise.

highdef2012
highdef2012

Caleb... do you really, REALLY believe China will put limits and control on it's own economy, severe limits that are needed, in order to reduce air pollution enough to make any difference?  While America works hard at controlling things, unilaterally, China has become the leader in exports.  Go to Walmart, check them out first hand.  Then get back to me and tell me we'll catch up to them with even stricter controls.
