The controversial U.S. military air base on Japan’s southern prefecture of Okinawa will be relocated to another part of the island after a decision by prefecture governor Hirokazu Nakaima.

The ruling follows 17 years of protests stemming from safety and environmental concerns, and is sure to be unpopular with many on the island. Nakaima was elected largely on the back of his campaign promise to permanently close the military installation.

Despite local opposition, Tokyo is keen to maintain Japan’s long-standing relationship with the U.S. as a counterweight to territorial disputes with China. Around 26,000 American troops are currently stationed in Okinawa as part of a security alliance.

Well as a US sailor and a voice of the other side since all I see in the comment section about how much the US is a pain well here we go. All of you say that we are in Japan cossing problems well here's what you must not know we have helped in Operation Comudochi with humanitarian efforts and more recently the storms that hit the Philippians plus we do training exercises with the Japanese military to help them protect them selves as well as making a good deterrent for others to attack Japan. We also are here in Japan building relations, Now I know I am going to all this hate mail for this post now I am going to give you a heads up I don't care since this is the first and last message I will post on this site.

japan needs to fend for itself.  it caused the problems it faces to today.  time to own up to the past and deal with it.

Japan may have learned a lesson or two in the Philippines, when the Philippine gov't, expelled the U.S. bases in the 90's China started to claim the whole South China Sea even islands closest to its coast. It is true without the counter balance of American military in that part of Asia China will claim everything...look at the case of Tibet.

Heres some things for you to read. What is sad is that this is not even necessary. Why are these bases still open. I was once proud of serving my country, but father 5 years time in Okinawa i don't even know if i can ever be a proud American again.

The legitimate elected government  of China is in Taipei. The Japanese should negotiate with them exclusively, and ignore the Maoist gangsters and usurpers on the mainland.

Japan must also return all lands stolen from the former Chinese Ch'ing Dynasty, which were supposed to have been returned (as was Taiwan) to modern China at the immediate end of hostilities at the conclusion of WWII.

The continuing failure to return those captured territories at the end of WWII (as promised) is the primary source of continuing Asian conflict with Japan, (even as it is a prima facie example of modern Japan's failure to abide by the terms of military surrender in 1945 nor the '1947 Peace Constitution / Heiwa Kenpo (平和憲法'), dictated by the Allies under General MacArthur as THE specific term of keeping the TOP Japanese War Criminal Hirohito and his family of military criminals from prosecution.

Finally Japan must sign the individual outstanding WWII peace treaties with all other Asian and South Pacific nations that it still refuses to submit WWII unconditional surrender and defeat documents to.

The current moves by Abe are therefore a very dangerous and circuitous effort to create public sentiment in Tokyo to re-arm Japan as a mighty military machine in direct contradiction of the Japanese Constitution.

Since Japan cannot yet admit that it killed 50 million Asians and at least do soul searching for such an extreme genocide, why should Japan be allowed to rearm, even in the 21st century Nuclear Age, 70 years after the fact?

The full text of Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution in Japanese reads:

“ 第九条 日本国民は、正義と秩序を基調とする国際平和を誠実に希求し、国権の発動たる戦争と、武力による威嚇又は武力の行使は、国際紛争を解決する手段としては、永久にこれを放棄する。
二 前項の目的を達するため、陸海空軍その他の戦力は、これを保持しない。国の交戦権は、これを認めない。

The official English translation oof Article 9 of the Japanese Constitution reads:

“ ARTICLE 9. Aspiring sincerely to an international peace based on justice and order, the Japanese people FOREVER RENOUNCE WAR as a sovereign right of the nation and the threat or use of force as means of settling international disputes.

(2) To accomplish the aim of the preceding paragraph, LAND SEA AND AIR FORCES, as well as other war potential, WILL NEVER BE MAINTAINED

The right of belligerency of the (Japanese) state will not be recognized.

Japan should emerge once again as a major power in Asia. Japan had to remain low all these years because of its role in WW II. This lull period was fully taken advantage of by Beijing.and  Its sprawling design includes many islands and even landed territories in India, Arunachel Pradesh. To block Beijing's ambition, Japan should refuel its war machine. The presence of Americans in Okinawa is very important, especially when Beijing is challenging Japan's air space. Like Israel in the Middle East, Japan can easily bloom into a major power in Asia in view of its intelligent man power and expertise in military technology.

@phoenixjoel You need to take a closer look at Okinawa, they are not Japanese, they are Japan's version of Tibetans. Why should they pay for everything?

I agree, the US should leave both Japan & Israel to themselves.... Even when Chinese soldiers march successfully into Tokyo and Iranian soldiers into Tel Aviv in exchange for not losing a single US life to protect them

That'll show the world....

Japan performed atrocities beyond words for over 200 years throughout south East Asia

Never again should she be allowed to have that power.... You have the greatest army behind you, yet you ungratefully disdain their presence?!

To hell with japan

Like Israel in the Middle East

70 years of killing and still no peace.  A populace who lives in constant fear surrounded by a big wall.  Responsible for the most heinous apartheid in world history.  Leaders who can't attend meetings in other countries because they've been declared war criminals.  Academics who can't participate on international academic panels because they've been ostracized by the world community.

Is that really what you think Japan should aspire to?

@TimRobinsonAus There are events happening these 2 years. 4 blood moons and a Lunar Eclipse. Confirmed by NASA and backed by the Bible, it will happen. It is a stern warning to the world to side with the protection with Israel. America is war weary from 12 years at war and the Islamic coalition is mounting up against Israel to destroy them. When God makes promises, He ALWAYS keeps them. Israel will win.

@richard.draucker @AbrahamYeshuratnam If Israel is ostracized, it shows its macho bravado.Others are unworthy to shake hands with Israel.

Then again, the blood of innocent children is so darn hard to remove, few really care to shake hands with Israel.
