Pope Francis holds a statue of baby Jesus as he celebrates the Christmas Eve Mass in St. Peter's Basilica at the Vatican, Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013

Syrian President Bashar al Assad has sent a letter to Pope Francis, Vatican sources confirmed Saturday.

The contents of the message were not revealed but Vatican officials said the message likely staked out the position of Assad’s government ahead of United Nations-brokered talks to end Syria’s three-year-old civil war, set to begin in Geneva January 22. The Vatican has permanent observer status at the U.N. and representatives at U.N. organizations in Geneva.

Pope Francis has taken a personal interest in resolving the Syrian conflict and called repeatedly for a negotiated end to the fighting, most recently on Christmas Day, Reuters reports. The Vatican is also interested in information on the fate of Father Paolo Dall’Oglio, a Jesuit priest and supporter of Syrian rebels who disappeared in the country in July.

God bless Bashar al Assad and his commitment to affection and respect for Christians in Syria. It is the western backed rebels who are terrorists, called in by Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the Muslim Brotherhood who are responsible for the atrocities committed in Syria, not the legitimate government and army of Syria.

I am not surprised.  The pope is a Jesuit.  Which is based in liberation theology.  He had his hands in the uprising in Argentina, and rebels were shielded by Jesuit priests throughout south and central america.  I am not pleased a Jesuit priest with such ties was elected pope, but we live in a very corrupt world these days.

hopefully asking for forgiveness.. He is however the lesser evil of many factions in that war (mote evil than the true FSA and the Kurds though).. the worst is the many salafist insurgents. (Al Nusra, ISIS, etc..) I support the real FSA who have had their revolution hijacked by hardline islamists. And the Kurds I support. Atleast with Assaf thereis religious freedin in Syria. thats why even though hes Shiite muslim he called the Pope.. I respect that move by Assad but I hope Francis didnt hold anything back and said what was on his mind!

Assad wants the Popes (remember they're two), to pray for the deliverance of his country from American/British tolerted & armed Al~qaida militants. Assad wants the head of Christianity to plead with two very important christian countries to stop clapping for islamist murderers.

Why not to the UN ?you see this man called Assad is on drugs to think like this, after all his killing he's calling on the Pope? So he feels interacting with the Pope makes him close to a saint?MAD MAN ASSAD.

i can recall reading that the POPE...(not this one) blessed the guns of the Nazi as they executed Jews and attempted to rule the world... i see no credit in this unless the actions and atrocities of Bashar Al ASSAD publicly denounced by the Vatican
