German Chancellor Angela Merkel fractured a bone in her pelvis during a cross-country skiing accident in Switzerland.
According to Merkel’s spokesman Steffen Seibert, the German leader was cross-country skiing in the Alpine Engadine of eastern Switzerland when she suffered a broken bone in her pelvis and severe bruising. The spokesman did not provide any more details about the accident, but said that Merkel was not skiing fast when she was injured. Seibert said that Merkel didn’t realize she was injured during the vacation, but only after returning to Berlin was she checked out and diagnosed.
According to the BBC, Merkel has canceled a trip to Poland as well as a meeting in Berlin with Luxembourg’s new prime minister Xavier Bettel, but she intends to chair a cabinet meeting with her coalition ministers this week. She is walking with the aid of crutches, but will spend much of the next three weeks lying down or in bed to recover from the injury.
