Pope Francis on January 13, 2014 in Vatican City, Vatican.

Pope Francis called abortion “horrific” on Monday, a remark that could assuage conservatives concerned that the new pontiff has struck a softer tone on social issues.

“It is horrific even to think that there are children, victims of abortion, who will never see the light of day,” he said in his toughest remarks to date on abortion in his “State of the World” address, Reuters reports.

Though Pope Francis hasn’t changed church doctrine, conservatives questioned his views on abortion in September when he told the Italian Jesuit magazine Civilta Cattolica that the Church needs to shake off its “obsession” with the teachings on abortion, contraception and homosexuality. Since then, Pope Francis has continued to advocate mercy over condemnation.

What did he say about the organized child rape of live children by tens of thousands of pedophile priests?

More importantly, what did he do to "seek the truth" and find the victims and get them help?  Nothing.

What would Jesus say about abortions?????

What's "horrific" is that 47,000 women die from unsafe abortion every year because of the ongoing battle on women's reproductive health. Ensuring all women have choice (whether in the form of contraception or abortion) is crucial to saving lives. That's why organizations like Pathfinder International, Ipas, IPPF, and Guttmacher stand up for those rights every day.

Please note once and for all that the Pope NEVER said that anyone in the Church was "obsessed" about abortion. The "obsessed" remark in the interview was 2 or 3 paragraphs away from the mention of abortion!!  He did say that some were obsessed with inculcating doctrine to the point of forgetting mercy - a good point. But it does not affect the fact that he is against abortion, because after all, he is Catholic!  It has nothing to do with "conservative" or "liberal." I've had it up to here with this kind of mindless misreporting by the media.

He did NOT say "horrific." In the official English translation of his remarks he said, "It is frightful even to think that there are children..." Please, TIME, get your facts straight.

As the population expands and pushes the planet's climate change ever further beyond the no-return threshold some suggest was passed almost two decades ago, the Pope wants Catholics to screw it up even more -- and have as many children as his horny followers desire, no matter what damage that causes because there's room in heaven (a fictional place that does no exist) for everybody's soul no matter how many people there are, and in the in the surplus escape place, another fiction that superstitious people call Hades, also known as hell.

@LaurenMcKown So essentially it is better to make the killing of children more convenient for the sake of the safety of the person choosing to do it?

@John2014 Jesus didn't say anything about the excessive use of heroin either...guess that means we should have at it!

The argument from silence is the poorest of all arguments in this context.

@RudyHaugeneder Well, thank whatever fictional charactor you worship that You weren't aborted so that today you are able to spew this retarded drivel all over the internet. Oh wait, you probably worship yourself you egotistical piece of codswallip. Hope you enjoy your afterlife in whatever fictional eternity you THINK you're destined for. IDIOT.

@RudyHaugeneder , thank God your parents did not think of you as surplus and abort you. The Pope is not speaking about population explosion. He is speaking about murder of innocent children, mostly as a result of debauchery.
