Gandhi Scion Declines Chance to Be India’s Next Leader

India's Congress party vice President, Rahul Gandhi addresses the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry's (FICCI) annual general meeting in New Delhi, on Dec. 21, 2013.

Rahul Gandhi, the vice president of India’s ruling Congress party and scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, will not run as Congress’s Prime Ministerial candidate for elections in 2014. The announcement Thursday comes as something of a surprise; Gandhi will still lead the party’s 2014 troubled election campaign.

The decision to not announce a prime ministerial candidate reportedly was the wish of Sonia Gandhi, Congress chief and Gandhi’s mother. Had he been anointed, the 43-year-old Gandhi would have had to slug it out against the more experienced and aggressive Narendra Modi, the opposition Bharatiya Janata Party’s dynamic and controversial prime ministerial candidate. The BJP will enter the elections with real momentum and some expect Congress to be swept away by a tide of anti-incumbency voters frustrated with the Indian status quo. In other words, if he put himself in line for the Prime Minister’s post, Gandhi could be putting himself in line for a considerable personal drubbing.

Gandhi, who has been often dubbed a reluctant heir-apparent, had cautiously accepted the leadership mantle first worn by his great-grandfather, India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. “I will do whatever the Congress Party wants me to do. I am only concerned about why the entire argument comes to standstill over the issue of a ‘post’,” he had told the Dainik Bhaskar recently.

As polls show his party losing ground to its rivals, Gandhi perhaps may not have worry about the Prime Minister’s job for quite some time.

Ha ha! He never actually said, he won't be the prime minister.  They just don't want to declare his name right now, to avoid the blame of losing in the forthcoming elections.  Didn't he say, "our elected representatives will elect the PM after the elections".  Translation: "If CONG-I comes to power we'll instruct  our Parliamentarians to then elect me as their PM.".  He's dying to become the PM.  More than him his Italian MOTHER who's been declined the post is burning with rage to see her son as PM, the heir of the  Nehru-Dynasty finally crowned long after his father.

In constitution a prime Minister is decided after the election results and if the party is in majority then only prime minister is final. The other parties are going against constitution.Sonia Gandhi is not a person ,knows not legalities. It is amazing in Time magazine such a news is there..

I'm waiting for the Congress crooks to now dub this "Rahul graciously turns down the temptations of power" - just like their similar spin when his mother Sonia ducked the Prime Minister's chair ten years ago. The Gandhis want power without responsibility - they prefer to have some lapdog on the throne as a frontman, while they can be the power behind the throne pulling the strings. It's disgusting, and it's a key reason why India has such a dysfunctional government.

This is a PR move to show that Rahul is independent and not a puppet of his overbearing, overzealous mother; which in fact he is.

It's a forgone conclusion that Rahul's congress will be routed from the political horizon of India in the coming general elections and Rahul's decision not to preside over the death of congress is,in his personal interest!

@rav4kar Unfortunately it's the Nehru-Gandhi Dynasty technically.  Because Mahatma, by some dreadful mistake gave his name to Mr.Firoz Shah, so that the Parsi Mr.Firoz Shah could be acceptable to the Nehru-Dynasty as the Son-in-Law.

Mr.Firoz Shah was a great leader, we hear he was a noble person even.

For that matter, despite all controversies and the mistakes like Emergency, Mrs.Indira Gandhi was one of the GREAT LEADERS of this nation; patriotic and involved in the freedom struggle right from her childhood.

It's incontrovertible that the Nehru Family, Mr.Jawaharlal Nehru's parents Mr.Motilal Nehru and Mrs.Swaroop Rani and Mr.Jawaharlal Nehru's Wife Mrs.Kamla Nehru were leaders and great freedom fighters, of course like millions of Indians.

But who knew that Nehru-Dynasty would fall into the hands of ... well,  huh! ....

@rav4kar It's the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty because Jawaharlal Nehru's daughter, Indira, married Feroze Gandhi (no relation to the Mahatma) and became Indira Gandhi. All the subsequent descendants of Indira who have been political leaders in India are, of course, also descendants of Nehru. Hence, you get the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty to acknowledge that the Gandhis are of the same family as Nehru.

@BittuMian @rav4kar That "Gandhi, the guy in Diapers , blah blah blah" is the Father-of-Nation, the person who was the forefront leader of the Freedom-Struggle, who united the nation to shake the BRITISH Empire and drive the cruel British Representatives leave the country in their diapers.  We refer to him as Mahatma Gandhi or Gandhiji or Bapu (Father).

rav4kar
rav4kar

@BittuMian@rav4karYes ..if you could recognize him only that way ( no arguments because it's simply based on one's depth of intellectual and knowledge about past / some people term it history)  What I really wanted to tell readers here is ..Nehru's family using (stole the name Gandhi) Gandhi as last name ( There is NOOOOOOO biological relations between Gandhi and Nehru, so there is only Nehru Dynasty ..no Gandhi dynasty ..Gandhi's kids live in some part of India leading simple life). So Nehru Dynasty use last name (Gandhi) and party ( Congress, not a political party but a freedom movement during British rule and NOT supposed to be used as political party at all after independence)! Gaddafi is Gone! Hosni Mubarak is Gone! But Nehru's dynasty is ruling for more than 60 years ..Why people still call India as democratic state or people elected govt.

Don't India, a country of billion people, have a single leader other than this dynasty family, why this family should involve in country's functions in 60 years past , now and future?

@BittuMian What about goats.   He had a kind of monastry where he used to feed animals.

And one of the two girls was surely his Grand-Niece. They used to assist him like a nurse after his wife passed away.

So, what about the girls?  What's Ur doubt? @NandaKishoreN
