Indian Village Tribunal Orders Gang Rape of Woman

The 20-year-old is brutally violated as 'punishment' for a love affair

A 20-year-old woman is lying in critical condition in hospital in the Indian state of West Bengal after she was allegedly gang-raped by at least a dozen men on the orders of a “salishi sabha”  — a traditional village tribunal — in the state’s Birbhum district.

The villagers convened the makeshift tribunal after spotting the young woman with a lover. They tied them to a tree and fined the couple 50,000 rupees (around $800). The headman of the tribunal allegedly ordered the rape when the woman’s family refused or were unable to pay the fine. He has now been arrested along with the 12 other men.

Four years ago, a teenage girl in the same area was forced by villagers to walk naked through four villages for having an affair.

Ruling party Trinamool Congress’s member of parliament, Derek O’ Brien called the incident a “social malaise” that needs to change.

His government, however, is blamed by many in the state for failing to arrest rising crime against women. West Bengal topped India’s states for crimes against women in 2011 and 2012. Incidents like the gang rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl just an hour from Kolkata in October last year, and the rape of a fitness center employee in a moving vehicle in the heart of Kolkata a few days ago, have added fuel to public anger.

Our foreign aid should have more strings attached.  There must be efforts to put an end to the disrespect of women and rights given them so they have protection from public knowledge of these attacks.  The victims shouldn't be victimized twice.  If these countries want to be part of  the global economies then they need to act on this, or lose their aid from us.

By the way, the reported case in this story has two sides. The villagers (not the village council, but the other women of that village) have said that in fact the woman was tied to the tree (which is not acceptable as well) but not raped. They say nothing of this sort happened at all. The investigation is going on, so let's wait.

India needs structural reforms in Society as well as administration. The administration may change in 5-10 years, given a strong political will, but the social reforms will take decades (need at least 2-3 generations, if started TODAY).

But that's about India. What's wrong with other societies, where the women are supposed to be more empowered - http://nyti.ms/rydnKn ?

And there are so many rapes (reported and unreported) happening in the US army and in other "developed countries". It's a global problem. Let's admit that.

It is most disheartening that no elected public representative or Govt has raised voice against Village council /Gram Panchayat

even  though Village council  is involved in illegal, inhuman acts. This is because No one wants to loose "Vote Bank'

This incident reveals rape case, however even young couples are killed if decides to marry intercaste. Is this called 'Democracy'

Village council is sovereign power in villages , even police official do not take action against  village council/members

People in villages are subordinates of Village council ,public have to remain submissive , Govt even though aware, remains silent

India is a caste based society, Birth, Schooling, Jobs, Marriage and even death is caste based if you don't follow the rules you get caste based rape, there is no shame in that, that's the LAW.

Going back in time, at the time of Delhi rape incident, there were mass protests in India. The same week that a leaked video out of Steubenville, Ohio showed high school boys joking and laughing about an unconscious teenager in the next room who had just been raped—“They raped her quicker than Mike Tyson!”—House Republicans let the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) expire. They opposed an expanded version of the legislation that had increased protections for the LGBT community, immigrants and Native American women.

This week we’ve also seen mass protests in India after a woman was brutally gang raped and died from her injuries. American media covering the Indian protests have repeatedly referenced the sexist culture, reporting how misogyny runs rampant in India. The majority of mainstream coverage of what happened in Steubenville (click here for a primer), however, has made no such connection. In fact, the frequent refrain in discussions of Steubenville in comment threads is that these boys are “sociopaths,” shameful anomalies. We’d rather think of them as monsters than hold ourselves accountable as a nation and tell the truth—these rapists are our sons.

It’s not just the parents of the accused rapists or the boys who made jokes who are complicit—it’s not just Steubenville, a town criticized for putting their prized high school football team above the law and justice for a young woman. Steubenville happens every day in the United States, and we’re all responsible.

We live in a country where politicians call rape a “gift from God” and suggest that women regularly lie about being raped. Where a group of young men in high school think so little of sexual assault that they thought it was fine—hilarious, even—to post pictures online of a passed out rape victim, and to live-tweet the rape, joking about the victim being urinated on. We live in a country where media as revered as The New York Times finds it necessary to describe an 11-year-old gang rape victim as “wearing makeup and fashions more appropriate to a woman in her 20s.” Where a woman can be fired because her boss finds her “irresistable” and a woman’s rape case falls flat because she isn’t married

It’s time to acknowledge that the rape epidemic in the United States is not just about the crimes themselves, but our own cultural and political willful ignorance. Rape is as American as apple pie—until we own that, nothing will change. Just before this news, there was a news in CA of three teenage boys raping a girls in San Jose. This shows that this is a worldwide problem. Hope the guilty will be punished everywhere.

Not the first case in the recent months…And we do business with them. Billions of dollars worth of business! We talk about human rights and defend them, but only when it is politically correct to do so.

The hypocrisy of our democracy has no limits…

This kind of behaviour won't take centuries to be erased, bonkim2003. All it takes is for a determined government to  arrest and jail these kangaroo court executioners; set bail at astronomical sums and not the ridiculously low sums as are done at present and make the punishment swift and exemplary -- such a strong deterrent that the next man would pee his pants at the mere thought of committing such a crime in future.  If cases take ages to come to trial and the trial itself drags on for ages during which the criminals roam free or are out on paltry bail sums, nothing will change. But if the government acts tough that's all it takes. But Indians dither -- it is a national characteristic!

@Onepatriot Agree whole-heartedly, but you see, the people who vote for and approve aid to these countries, are American male politicians in Washington who are just as Neanderthal as the men in these middle eastern countries.

FeetCandy

@ModernTimes Yes, let's wait and see because heaven knows something like this could NEVER happen in one of these middle eastern countries. . . they have so much respect for women. . . similar to that of the United States House of Representatives.

@ModernTimes B e ashamed of what happened to the tribal girl in your country. She was raped by the whole bunch of animals which never happens in any other country. As long as you people run fanatical governments, you do not have time to look into these atrocities.

@BittuMian And you think that because it's the law it's right? Wow, none of the people in that country are right in the head. . . you're all sick.

"1 in 5 American Women Sexually Assaulted"

Ok, Let's talk about YOUR hypocrisy ClauLuke. http://nyti.ms/rydnKn

This is the situation of almost all highly populated societies. After the horrific incident of December 16, 2012, in India, the news reporters are now more alert about anything of this kind coming out of India, because that's what sells quickly, but that doesn't mean the crime of this type has stopped in the US or the UK or Brazil (or other Latin american countries).

So if you don't want to do business with them, "billions of dollars worth of business" (ah you ignorant, you could check some of the facts before posting) - you can do it. India is a big (in your words, "worth billions of dollars") market that buys American products (cars, gadgets, food and many other things), leave alone creating jobs inside America. So if you want to stop that "business of billions of dollars", you're welcome to do it. Go ahead! Arrogance as usual!

ModernTimes
ModernTimes

@B Unfortunately, because of these idiots, Americans have lost that title. I agree! By the way - http://nyti.ms/rydnKn this could help decide too.

FeetCandy

@bonkim2003 Will NEVER go because this "middle age mindset" has been in existence in India and other middle eastern countries for thousands of years and will continue for thousands more.

FeetCandy
FeetCandy

@ModernTimes India doesn't create jobs in America. . . they steal jobs and India doesn't support this country so quit acting as if we couldn't survive without them. Oh and by the way, pointing a finger at anyone who does the same horrific thing, doesn't make it right in their country, or yours!

ClauLuke
ClauLuke

@ModernTimes It is very sad that your first answer about a village-approved rape was to make us all aware that there is rape incidents in the USA as well (wow!). There is a BIG difference: rape is prosecuted by law in the USA and we don't rape the victims (!) but help them overcome that trauma. It is NEVER the decision of a village whose animal instinct dictated to gang rape a woman, by men arouse by animal instincts beyond human understanding. What an aberration!
