Several attacks in and around Baghdad on Sunday killed at least 10 and left dozens wounded.

A parked car rigged with bombs exploded near a local council building in Mahmudiyah, followed by another at a market not far away. The two attacks killed six and wounded 15 in the city south of Baghdad, which was part of the restive “Triangle of Death” during much of the American occupation. Another explosives-filled car detonated in a northern Baghdad neighborhood, according to early reports, killing four and wounding eleven.

The violence in and around Iraq’s capital continues as the government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki battles insurgents in parts of western Anbar Province. Government forces have been battling alongside Sunni militias to drive militants out of Fallujah and Ramadi for several weeks.

According to some tallies, the death toll topped 1,000 in Iraq in January, the deadliest month in the country in six years.
