Report: Saudis To Arm Syrian Rebels With Anti-Aircraft Weapons

Arab backers stepping up support after fruitless peace talks conclude

Arab backers of the Syrian opposition are stepping up their military support for the rebels, providing the beleaguered forces with more sophisticated anti-aircraft weaponry in the wake of a second round of inconclusive talks with the Syrian regime.

The Wall Street Journal, citing an unnamed Arab diplomat and opposition sources, said that Saudi Arabia would give the Syrian opposition Chinese man-portable air defense systems, or Manpads, and antitank guided missiles from Russia. The U.S. has opposed that kind of military support out of fear that the weapons could fall into the hands of terrorists or al-Qaeda affiliates.

The new aid is being delivered directly to the more moderate Free Syrian Army in the south of Syria, which has been launching an offensive against government forces since January. Meanwhile, the U.S. has increased its financial support of the rebels, paying million of dollars for the fighters’ salaries.

It is not surprising the last Geneva talks ended with no tangible progress, nay achievements. What was programmed to fail, would hardly succeed anyway. However, it should be hoped, predestiny or accident of history did not make Syria the last battle ground where all the major contending interests converged to fight along side allies, or even strange bed fellows that together espoused the same cause. Or the first that exposed and further widened the divide between the East and West, in their creeping and zealous revival of traditional rivalry. In which case, only alignment and realignment of allies gradually follows. But whichever way the pendulum swings, the world is at a crossroads in the Syrian debacle.

This is going to be rich.

One or more of these will be fired at Israeli aircraft -- maybe a military helicopter or an airliner.

It will be good to have AIPAC go after the Saudi's backers in the US.

A political cage fight worth watching.

The audience should throw in box-cutters.

Exactly right Ruth Feldman. This is why the Saudis are supporting rebellion in Syria and smashed peaceful dissent in Bahrain.

I support the Saudi's with this move. It will help even the playing field in the war by limiting Syria Air Force. Next is anti-tank weapons for rebels.

Why adding fuel to the fire? It is high time that the waring sides talk peace for the sake of innocent victims.

Oh....the Saudi rulers and most of the population are Sunni, as are most of the Syrian rebels. The Syrian ruler is Shiite.

This is clearly a war by proxy between Iran and Saudi Arabia. The only ones who suffer are the innocent children who die every single day.

I seem to remember the CIA doing this in Afghanistan with the mujahideen. And being very unsuccessful with the buy back program.
