China Warns Obama Not to Meet With Dalai Lama

The president and the exiled spiritual leader are scheduled to meet on Friday

Chinese officials warned President Barack Obama on Friday that his meeting with the Dalai Lama would “interfere with the internal affairs of China.” Similar threats were made when Obama met with the exiled spiritual leader in 2010 and 2011.

“By arranging a meeting between the President and the Dalai Lama, the U.S. side will grossly interfere in the internal affairs of China, seriously violate norms governing international relations and severely impair China-U.S. relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Hua Chunying said in a statement, CNN reports.

Obama is meeting Friday with the Dalai Lama, who China considers to be a separatist fueling unrest in Tibet. The Dalai Lama says he only wants Tibet to have enough power to uphold Buddhist cultural traditions. Leaders from the Obama administration said they support the spiritual leader and his approach and are against Tibetan independence.

“The United States recognizes Tibet to be a part of the People’s Republic of China and we do not support Tibetan independence,” said National Security Council spokeswoman Caitlin Hayden. “The United States strongly supports human rights and religious freedom in China.”

Time is on China's side. He has no legitimate heir in China, and his cronies in hiding in Dharmasala are getting more marginalized by the day.

All China has to do is wait until the Dalai Lama dies.

Obama should warn China to start treating their own citizens with human rights.

I do not think Dalai Lama is a higher level spiritual teacher as it supposed to be. As he always hang out with entities like celebrities, politicians, paparazzi... I doubt if his love still pure enough rather than being polluted.

The fact that this article exists just shows us the naivety of Western Media or its inability to expose the truth concerning the vicious Chinese Communist Party. The blood-thirsty Chinese Communist Party has murdered over fifty million of its own people since 1949 and since 1999 has been attempting the genocide of the tens of millions of innocent Falun Gong practitioners who live in China. This genocide consists of torture, slavery, organ harvesting and murder. The evil CCP should be looked upon with fear and disgust and should never have the right to discuss how the President of the U.S.A. should behave. The weak U.N. even appointed the cruel CCP a seat on its Human Rights Council this year. Disgraceful. Like Bob Dylan said:" Money doesn't talk, it swears."

^Wrong. The Mongolians had their fun with Tibet during the Yuan dynasty, more than 800 years before the CCP even existed. China merely inherited Tibet from the Mongolians when the latter retreated back to their own country.

They tried the same stunt when Germany's Angela Merkel met the Dalai Lama in 2007. The bottom line was that the Chinese cancelled one meeting with Germany's minister of justice Brigitte Zypries. Soon it was back to business as usual... No big deal

Thank you kindly for the explanation. :) I've always been a firm believer in the "middle ground" philosophy and know a bit about the DL and his beliefs but have not really read up on things in the sociopolitical context. Just a matter of connecting the dots. However, doing so seems to bring to light even more questions...further research is warranted. I thank you again for giving me your perspective in the matter. :) Namaste!

@Tes Oates Dalai Lama believes in Middle Way which means that Tibetans are willing to stay under China as long as China treats them equally. One main reason he believes this approach is because he doesn't want anymore killing and suffering of his people. However, majority of the Tibetan people are Rangzen believers, which means independence believers. Most Tibetans want their motherland back especially since after all the harrowing brutality the Chinese have imposed since 1959. So thus, Obama does not support Tibetan freedom or Tibetan independence because it will anger and disrupt the US and Chinese relationship. Obama claims to support Dalai Lama's Middle Way which is more lenient for the Chinese Communist government rather than Tibetan Independence.

Before commenting, learn something about Tibetan history, smarties. Btw, Dalai Lama , this name is Chinese pinyin. Haha. I know some of you guys don't even know where Tibetan is, no mention that 60 years ago Tibetan were living in a slave society, Dalai Lamaes were slave owners.

People over the world are so blinded by medias. I'm not blaming anyone, but I'd just suggest everybody to read some neutral and objective history. Moreover, regarding self as the savior is dangerous.

I suppose you WERE TAUGHT like that.  Now why do you think other people write different things here?

That's because you weren't taught the truth.  Now that you can read English, you should know how the rest of the world know and think.

I read in a book that Chinese kids were taught Dalai Lama was a separatist.  I doubted this but your comment taught me it's true.

@Naomi_Karina I‘am a chinese student and I don't agree with you.I have to admit  that UN is the most powerful country in the world and does better in many aspects than China and that’s what we ARE TAUGHT.Our teachers(my high school and univertity teachers) tell us that the history we learn from book is not totaly right. They tell us if having chance,go abroad and see what the real world is and learn from those western countries because we,ourselves, are not doing that good, because we are facing many  problems in environment, education, medical treatment, the law system and e.t.c. and its our duty to solve these problems.

I dont think that you can say you know China through only a book. The real China is not like what most people imagine. If you want to know what the real china is and why we dont like Dalai,I suggest you read more books or have a visit  to China and see from your own eyes.China is not a heaven ,nor a hell.

I am learning Ehglish and if there is any mistake ,I will try to correct.
