India’s capital, New Delhi, has a disturbingly high infant-mortality rate, according to a new report released by the NGO Save the Children. The rate of 30 deaths per 1,000 births in Delhi compares unfavorably with cities like Mumbai (20) and Chennai (15).

Early mortality is a particular concern. In Delhi, of all children dying before their first birthday, 64% died within the first 28 days of birth.

Such deaths can be prevented with better access to health care and the presence of qualified birth attendants, says the report, released on Tuesday. The research found that incidences of infant death are almost three times higher in poorer households.

India managed to bring down under-5 mortality by almost 54% between 1990 and 2012 (compared with a global reduction of 44.8%). But with nearly 40% of neonatal deaths occurring on the day an infant is born, the country is still struggling with postpartum care.

“If we want to achieve MDG 4 [Millennium Development Goal regarding child mortality] by 2015, we have to focus on ensuring survival on the first day of birth,” Thomas Chandy, CEO of Save the Children, India, said in a statement.

Religion or so doesn't let them to use condoms, but killing infants is okay

They definitely want to bypass China as most populated country. As germans teach in the textbooks for kids, NEVER EVER give them money. They have 5 kids now, you give them money, they will have 12 kids and still be asking for money!

India is not in the Middle East, FYI. And I am an Indian National, so I think I would know a little better than you about the conditions that are prevalent in India.

Katherine you should learn basic geography,India is not in the middle east.Did you even read the article ,it says India reduced infant mortality by 54% which is more than the world average which is 44%.We have been independent for only 66 yrs,we are still building our country,we just need time.

Maybe you should read Half the Sky by Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. I took a whole college course about how women are treated in the Middle East, so... I have a good idea how women are treated there.

Yes, Katherine. All 1.2 billion of us across 28 states hate women. You must know so much about India. If you think that statistics like this don't make ordinary and concerned citizens of India worried and sad, then I think you're horribly mislead. India has a million problems and plagues that it tries hard to fight every day. We are obviously failing. It's great you make us out to be heartless creatures, because we all know only people in the West care about well being of others.

One reason medical facilities are overloaded by 100 times more people than can be handled, which also makes the system suffer and hygiene too is at its worst. people from all over the country visit and this makes is a thankless job so also the quality suffers

Well yeah. They hate women, so why would they care to make child birth safe?
