Mars One CEO Bas Lansdorp holds a press conference to announce the launch of astronaut selection for a Mars space mission in New York City on April 22, 2013

A religious watchdog in the United Arab Emirates has issued a fatwa against traveling to Mars with Dutch entrepreneur Bas Lansdorp’s project Mars One.

The organization, General Authority of Islamic Affairs and Endowments (GAIAE), has likened the voyage to committing suicide, something that is forbidden according to Islam.

“It is not permissible to travel to Mars and never to return if there is no life on Mars,” GAIAE said in a statement. “The chances of dying are higher than living.”

Mars One, which has advertised the journey as a one-way trip, has asked UAE’s Islamic authorities to withdraw the fatwa, stating that “only when [a habitable] outpost is established will human lives be risked in Mars One’s plan.” The statement goes on to compare the first Martian settlers with Muslim explorers like Ibn Battuta, and includes a Koranic verse that “encourages Muslims to go out and see the signs of God’s creation in the ‘heavens and the earth.’”

Space culture isn’t new to Islam. In 2006, Islamic scholars and scientists formalized rules on how Muslim astronauts are supposed to perform their daily prayers at the International Space Station, where days last no longer than 90 minutes. The UAE has also previously supported space travel, with Abu Dhabi’s Aabar Investments teaming up with Richard Branson to create the spaceflight-tourism company Virgin Galactic.

Mars One shouldn’t feel specifically singled out, though, since GAIAE has issued nearly 2 million fatwas since 2008. It is also unclear how many of Mars One’s 1,058 short-listed candidates are Muslims.

My Theory about Why Mars lost its Atmosphere?

As far as I am seeing, our Sun getting older but when our Sun was younger mars was at green zone.

So, that is sure living Atmosphere was at Mars planet but as Green Zone sifted to Earth Mars lost its living Atmosphere.

Seed

A seed itself everything to give big tree in future, but if it not get any atmosphere [Green Zone ] to become a big tree, its all possible internal energy and property is waste.

Planet

A planet core is able to produce magnetic field only when it comes under green zone because of sun.

So, seed internal property equal to planet’s core. Both would active under proper atmosphere/condition.

It's a big deal because it's indicative that discovering alien life, visiting other planets, furthering our knowledge of our place in the universe has zero impact on the religious mind. It will not result in any paradigm shift. Our problems with religious thinking and division are ours to solve. There is some underlying hope that discovering alien life would force a reconciliation and/or help to facilitate a paradigm shift. This is indicative that it is a false hope.

Seriously, what exactly does Islam contribute to the Mars mission, and why is this such a big deal?

"The chances of dying is higher than living" I say the chances of dying anywhere in the universe including muslim mosques is 100 percent. Its just a matter of time. or wait. maybe they do live forever.

Those suicide bombers are nutcases and the actual act of suicide is strictly forbidden in Islam at all times, just like Catholic priests molesting boys doesn't mean that those actions are permissible in Catholicism.

Why can't there be a Fatwa against suicide bombers?

Lee Trainor

But it is OKAY for a child to be raised to Martyr themselves? It's okay to drive a truck into a building, or fly a plane into a building? Not mocking- just, questioning. Also, I think that would mean Islamics would NEVER war, or Caravan, or explore- which they have and still do. It would n Mean they would have NEVER left their birthplace- since who knew just how big the Sahara was- why venture across in ancient times? Did someone actually know there was life on the other side?

So I searched and while it is Against the Law to Commit Suicide. It is not against their law to make someone commit the act of suicide. I'm reading of where a 10 year old girl was made to wear a suicide vest.
If I were to travel on such a venture, I may defer if there was someone from that religion on board.
For they may be there for the purposes of blowing up the mission.
While there may be laws of religious freedoms and anti-discrimination laws on Earth. Such laws may need to not apply when new settlers on Mars can enact laws for their own safety, that no country on Earth can change ...

Organized religious dogmas create infantile human beings, who without their simple beliefs in prophets and hopes of easy salvation would otherwise be ill equipped to cope with the wondrous uncertainties of existence. These religions cater to the reptilian part of the mind, to our primitive binary sense of pleasure/fear, fight/flight, shame/honor. It is a regressive force dragging is back in evolution as is evident from this stupid fartwa.

Mohammad Gdeisat

To be fair to them, their justification is "One should not (directly or indirectly) kill himself". I think that they have a quite logical point of view and I think that most countries in the world have laws against that. I may not agree with them but in the same time I don't see that what they said is ridiculous or outrageous.

Tasnim Ahmed
Tasnim Ahmed

I don't see the logic behind this, you are at a risk of dying regardless of what you do and you will eventually die so why would travelling to another planet not be permissible?

You gotta be kidding me! Why do these people even make it to the news?? Spreading false messages. Btw, those of you who are making negative remarks about muslims and islam, get help. Ignorance is NOT a bliss. Especially, if you're in your 40's and over! Get an education man, its still not to late to seek proper knowledge. I'm a believer so I will conclude with this, stay blessed and may God guide us all.
