More than 2,000 people, including all surviving U.S. Presidents as well as representatives of foreign states and figures from the world of entertainment, will fill St. Paul’s cathedral next Wednesday for the funeral of Margaret Thatcher. Releasing the guest list for the service, a spokesperson from Number 10 Downing St, the Prime Minister’s office said in a statement: Those invited include family and friends of Lady Thatcher, those who worked with her over the years, including all surviving members of her cabinets, former chiefs of staff, Conservative associates, peers and MPs, members of the cabinet, peers and MPs, members of the Order of the Garter, members of the Order of Merit, foreign associates and dignitaries and representatives from the wide range of groups she was associated with. The spokesperson added that some 200 states, territories and international organizations—“those countries and institutions with whom we have normal diplomatic relations”—would be invited to send a representative to the service. The Queen, who last attended the funeral of a British politician in 1965, after the death of wartime Prime Minister Winston Churchill, is already confirmed to be attending along with the Duke of Edinburgh. (MORE: Praise for the Baroness: Political tributes for Thatcher) All members of the current Cabinet have been invited, as well as all surviving members of Lady Thatcher’s Cabinets — including Michael Heseltine, Thatcher’s cabinet rival who, by challenging her for the Conservative party leadership in 1990, ousted her from power. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has already said he will attend. And, despite Thatcher’s vigorous opposition to the European Union, E.U. President Manuel Barroso will also been invited. One notable absence will be Neil Kinnock—leader of the opposition for much of Thatcher’s time in office, and a bitter political rival—who has said he will not attend the service because he is already due to go to a friend’s funeral in Wales on that day. Other Thatcher contemporaries from her time in office will also be absent. A spokeswoman for Nancy Reagan—who is said to be “heartbroken” at the news of Lady Thatcher’s death—said

The daughter of Colonel Muammar Gaddafi was thrown out of Algeria after repeatedly setting fire to her safe house there. Aisha Gaddafi was forced to flee Libya in 2011 after the uprising that killed her father, who had ruled the country for 42 years. She arrived, heavily pregnant, in Algeria with other family members after her husband, a Libyan army general, was killed along with two of their three children in a bombing raid. Algeria said it agreed to shelter the group because Aisha was so close to giving birth, and also because the International Criminal Court had not at that time issued arrest warrants for any members of the party. (MORE: The Case of the Disappearing Gaddafis) Algeria confirmed last month that Aisha, together with Gaddafi’s second wife Safia and sons Hannibal and Muhammad had left the presidential palace they had been given in the coastal region of Staoueli, close to Algiers, “a long time ago,” leaving their whereabouts unknown. But the Daily Telegraph reports that Aisha was kicked out of the country along with her family members because, among other misdemeanors, she kept setting fire to her residence in fits of rage over her situation. While there she also attacked her bodyguards, smashed furniture and destroyed a portrait of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika — the latter act reportedly being the last straw. A government source in Algiers told local newspaper Ennahar: She ended up blaming Algeria for many of her problems, and also began starting fires in the house. Shelves in the library went up in flames, as she regularly attacked army personnel looking after her safety. They have since been granted asylum “on humanitarian grounds” in Oman and have been living there since October 2012. Their expenses are being covered entirely by the Omani government, writes the Telegraph. (MORE: Gaddafi’s Ghost: How the Tyrant Haunts Libya a Year After His Death) Aisha is a western-educated lawyer who, according to the New York Times, once worked on Saddam Hussein’s legal-defense team.
A Greek soccer player has been banned from his country’s national team for life after making a Nazi salute during a game. Giorgos Katidis, who plays for AEK Athens, made the gesture towards towards his club’s supporters after scoring the winning goal against Veria in the Greek Super League on Saturday, reports Reuters. The Hellenic Football Federation—Greek soccer’s governing body—immediately handed Katidis a lifetime ban from the country’s national teams. It said in a statement: “The player’s action to salute to spectators in a Nazi manner is a severe provocation, insults all the victims of Nazi bestiality and injures the deeply pacifist and human character of the game.” (MORE: Greek Gloom Deepens After Loss to Germany in Euro 2012) Katidis apologized and asked to be dropped from the AEK first team, reports Reuters. But he reportedly claimed that his stiff-armed, open-palmed gesture was not intended to have fascist connotations, and that he was merely pointing to injured teammate Michalis Pavlis, who was sitting in the crowd. He later released a statement, as Reuters reports: “Unfortunately I cannot take the clock back but I want to clarify that I am not a fascist or neo-Nazi or racist. I have a step brother from Puerto Rico and all my family are from the Black Sea and have experienced racism in the worst ways,” he said. (MORE: Europe’s Right Wing: A Nation-by-Nation Guide to Political Parties and Extremist Groups) AEK’s German coach Ewald Lienen defended his player, saying that Katidis holds no political views, reports the BBC. “He most likely saw such a salute on the Internet or somewhere else and did it without knowing what it means,” he said. Katidis’ actions, which caused outrage on social media sites, came at an especially sensitive time: Sunday marked the 70th anniversary of the deportation of Greek Jews to Nazi concentration camps during the Second World War, as Reuters notes. It also comes amid a rising tide of ultranationalism in Greece amid the country’s crippling financial crisis.
Today signals the first day of Pope Francis’ reign as the new leader of the Catholic Church, and already the pontiff is faced with a challenge. As Argentines and Catholics across the globe celebrate the election of the first ever Latin American pope, comments made by the former Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio regarding the Falkland Islands dispute have emerged. Last April, at a memorial mass in Buenos Aires marking the 30th anniversary of the 1982 Falkland Islands conflict, Cardinal Bergoglio told his followers that they had come together to “pray for those who have fallen, the sons of our homeland who went out to defend their mother country, to reclaim what is theirs of the homeland, that which was usurped from them.” He also spoke of the many young Argentines who never returned from the war, while others “came back but were never able to forget,” writes AciPrensa. Whether or not they fought in the battleground, these young people were scared for life, the Cardinal said. Three years earlier, Cardinal Bergoglio told families of Argentine soldiers killed in the conflict to “go and kiss this land which is ours, and seem to us far away,” notes the Independent. (MORE: Pope of the Americas) His words echo those of Cristina Fernández Kirchner, President of Argentina, who in January sent an open letter to the British Prime Minister David Cameron calling on him to honor a United Nations resolution that dates back to 1960 and “end colonialism in all its forms and manifestations,” writes the Guardian. She wrote in the letter that the “Malvinas” (as the islands are known in Argentina) are 8,600 miles away from London and claimed that the Royal Navy had expelled Argentines living on the islands and replaced them with British settlers, a move that, she says, was a “blatant exercise in nineteenth-century colonialism.” Meanwhile, the inhabitants of the Falkland Islands have expressed surprise at the election of Pope Francis. Monsignor Michael McPartland from St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Stanley admitted this morning that he had never actually heard of Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio until his election as

The last surviving member of a plot to kill Adolf Hitler has died at the age of 90. Ewald-Heinrich von Kleist once volunteered for a suicide attack on Adolf Hitler, and was later involved in the famous “Operation Valkyrie” attempt on the dictator’s life. As a 22-year-old army lieutenant, von Kleist had been chosen to model a new army uniform for Hitler. Having met the army officer and Hitler-opponent Claus von Stauffenberg while recovering from injuries sustained in 1943 on the Eastern Front, he volunteered to wear a suicide vest underneath his uniform, and detonate it while he stood next to the dictator. (MORE: Hitler, Frankenstein Compete in Indian Local Elections) When told about the plan, his father—who had opposed Hitler since before the war and had been arrested many times for resistance activity—said: “Yes, you have to do that. A man who doesn’t take such a chance will never be happy again in his life,” reports the New York Times. The plan fell through, because Hitler had changed his plans – as he frequently did later in the war. But von Kleist volunteered for a second assassination attempt—masterminded by von Stauffenberg and portrayed in the 2008 movie Valkyrie, starring Tom Cruise—in which he would carry a briefcase packed with explosives to a meeting at Hitler’s Wolf’s Lair in occupied Poland. (MORE: Adolf Hitler’s ‘Wolf Lair’ Is Now Up for Rent) But von Stauffenberg ended up entering by himself, and the plot unravelled when the briefcase, which von Stauffenberg had placed in a conference room where Hitler was meeting with aides, was moved next to a heavy oak table leg. Although four people were killed and virtually everyone in the room was injured, Hitler escaped the full force of the blast. Von Stauffenberg was later tracked down to his offices in Berlin and subsequently court martialed and executed by firing squad. Von Kleist was also arrested and interrogated for several weeks. But, while most of the other conspirators, including his own father, were killed, von Kleist was unexpectedly released and allowed to return to

Is this what progress looks like in Saudi Arabia? The kingdom is considering ending execution by beheading in favor of firing squads, reports the Egyptian English-language news website Ahram Online. A committee consisting of representatives from the Ministries of Interior, Justice and Health says there are shortages in government swordsmen and argue that a change to execution by firing squad would not violate Islamic law, the Saudi daily newspaper al-Youm writes. According to an official statement from the committee, “This solution seems practical, especially in light of shortages in official swordsmen or their belated arrival to execution yards in some incidents.” Execution by beheading in Saudi Arabia has continually been condemned by human-rights groups. According to Human Rights Watch (HRW), at least 69 people were executed by beheading in 2012, while Amnesty International says 79 were killed under the death penalty in the same period. In 2012 HRW wrote, “Saudi Arabia has no penal code, so prosecutors and judges largely define criminal offenses at their discretion.” Rape, murder, armed robbery, drug trafficking and even suspected “sorcery” are punishable by death under Saudi Arabia’s Islamic law. (MORE: Sri Lankan Maids Become Victims in Saudi Arabia) The Saudi death penalty recently made headlines following the execution of Rizana Nafeek, a young Sri Lankan woman who was beheaded for the murder of her employers’ 4-month-old son. Nafeek arrived in Saudi Arabia in 2005 at age 17 but spent the next seven years in Saudi jails after the baby died under her care, writes CNN. The family of the boy believed he had been strangled by Nafeek, while she claimed he had choked on his milk. The young Sri Lankan immigrant had no access to a lawyer during her pretrial interrogation during which she said she was forced to sign a confession, notes CNN. The execution of this young woman revealed how “woefully out of step they [the Saudi justice system] are with their international obligations regarding the use of the death penalty,” said Philip Luther from Amnesty International.
Israeli Deputy Health Minister Yaakov Litzman has called for an investigation into the reported administering of Depo-Provera contraceptive shots to Ethiopian immigrant women without consent. Depo-Provera is a progestrogin-only contraceptive that is administered every three months through injection. According to Dr. Paula Franklin of Marie Stopes International who spoke with TIME, it is a “safe, medium-term reversible hormonal contraceptive” that is used around the world by women of “informed consent.” However, countless Ethiopian women have reportedly been given this contraceptive without understanding or consent. The news that Ethiopian women were being injected with Depo-Provera, a contraceptive shown to have links with bone loss, emerged in December 2012 following a documentary by Israeli journalist Gal Gabai. In her short film titled Where Did the Children Disappear to, Gabai revealed that, in the past decade, the birthrate among Ethiopian immigrants had decreased by 50%, writes the Jewish Daily Forward. She discovered that women were denied proper family-planning counseling or an outline of birth control methods from medical staff, while others were informed that their entry into Israel would be blocked if they refused to take the contraceptive, notes the Guardian. Many had no idea what they were being injected with. In the documentary, Gabai offers two possible explanations — either it is “an intention to do good, to prevent poverty and to help with the adjustment to Western urbanized living,” or it’s an “economic calculation to reduce immigration and absorption costs.” “This story reeks of racism, paternalism and arrogance,” Gabai told viewers during the broadcast on Israeli Educational Television. (MORE: Women Who Use Injectable Contraception at Twice the Risk of HIV) The issue of contraceptive shots to Ethiopian women first came to light in 2009 when Hedva Eyal, from the female support group Woman to Woman, published a report similar to Gabai’s film, writes Haaretz. The Health Ministry responded at the time that Depo-Provera was only used “when there is a medical indication to do so and other methods [of contraception] cannot be used.” Although an investigative committee has now been set up by the Israeli Health

As Pope Benedict XVI steps down today as head of the Roman Catholic Church, a new survey shows that most people across Europe feel that the outgoing pontiff has made little difference to their lives. According to market research firm YouGov’s latest Eurotrack survey—which monitors public opinion in Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Finland—a majority of people in every country polled feel that their politicians have paid little or no attention to the views of Pope Benedict or local Catholic bishops. In France, which is predominantly Roman Catholic, 61% of people believe Benedict has not been influential. And a majority of people in almost every country say their leaders were right to not pay much attention to the Pope’s views. The exception is Germany—Benedict’s country of birth—where 43% believing the Pope should be listened to and 40% saying he should be ignored. (MORE: Benedict Promises Obedience to Successor) Generally, people have a more positive than negative view of Benedict’s performance during his eight years as Pope, the poll shows. But most say that he was right to resign, the survey shows — echoing the support his decision has received, in light of his failing health, from Cardinals and Vatican officials. Support for his resignation was highest in Germany, at 82%. On issues such as women priests, homosexuality and birth control, most people feel that Pope Benedict has been “too conservative and changed things too little”. A majority of people across the six countries said they “would be delighted” if the Cardinals choosing the next Pope selected a pontiff who wanted to permit Catholic couples to use contraception. The Eurotrack survey was conducted Feb. 21-27 via an online survey of some 6,600 European adults.
The Minister for Industry and Commerce in Bahrain, Hassan Fakhro, has announced the government’s decision to ban the importation of the V for Vendetta/Guy Fawkes masks, reports the Independent. The mask – which has come to represent a universal symbol of protest – has been worn by protesters in the Gulf state calling for democratic reform and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Khalifa bin Salman al-Khalifa, a scion of a royal line that has ruled Bahrain for generations. There have been almost daily demonstrations in Bahrain since the mass protest of Feb. 14, writes the Guardian. The demonstrators continue to call for greater rights for the country’s Shia majority, even though the government denies discriminating against Shias. “The majority of Bahrainis really just want to live in basic dignity and freedom,” Ala’a Shehabi, founder of Bahrain Watch, told the Guardian. “They don’t believe the current royal family is willing to deliver that.” (MORE: Bahrain Puts 11-year-old on Trial over Protests) The ban on V for Vendetta masks is the latest attempt by the Bahraini government to quell the pro-democracy fever spreading through the country. The Interior ministry has ordered the border regions and port authorities to prevent the masks from being imported. The national ban on the masks means that protesters will no longer be able to hide their identity behind the face of Guy Fawkes. The mask itself first became popular after the release of the 2005 film V For Vendetta, which was inspired by a graphic novel illustrated by David Lloyd. “The Guy Fawkes mask has now become a common brand and a convenient placard to use in protest and against tyranny,” the artist told the BBC in late 2011. The masks were first used publicly by the hacker-activist group Anonymous in 2008 during a protest against Scientology, and later gained popularity through the 2011/12 ‘Occupy Movements’ across the globe. Wikileaks founder Julian Assange arrived to speak at the Occupy London Stock Exchange protest in 2011 wearing the mask.
The Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon has released a statement saying the U.N. will not pay compensation for the victims of the 2010 cholera outbreak in Haiti. Citing section 29 of the 1946 convention, the U.N. will use its legal immunity to avoid claims that it is responsible for the spread of a disease that killed around 7,750 Haitians. The Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti (IJDH), a group based in Boston, brought the call for compensation to the U.N. in November 2011, writes the Guardian. The group argued that the cholera infection arrived in Haiti in the form of U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal and spread following the country’s epochal 2010 earthquake and humanitarian disaster. A report from Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) revealed in mid-2011 that “there was an exact correlation in time and places between the arrival of a Nepalese battalion from an area experiencing a cholera outbreak and the appearance of the first cases in Meille a few days after.” In October 2012, a leading U.S. cholera specialist Dr. Daniele Lantagne said, “that the strain of cholera in Haiti is an exact match for the strain of cholera in Nepal,” writes the Guardian. (MORE: Haiti Three Years After the Quake: There’s Good News, Too) In his statement, the Secretary General carefully avoided accepting or denying responsibility for the pandemic. He said that, since the outbreak, the United Nations and its partners have worked with the people of Haiti and the Haitian government “to provide treatment, improve water and sanitation facilities, and strengthen prevention and early warning.” He also expressed his “profound sympathy” to those who have suffered because of the illness. According to Reuters, Ban Ki-moon has contacted the Haitian President Michel Martelly telling him that the U.N. will not pay the $100,000 for families of people killed and $50,000 for victims, requested by the IJDH group in Boston. Maximillien Saint Juste, who was treated for cholera in 2011, told the Guardian that he has faced “discrimination” since contracting the disease. “A lot of

Adolf Hitler is running for election in a state in northeast India – and he’s going up against Frankenstein. Adolf Lu Hitler-Marak and Frankenstein Momin are competing against candidates named Process, Highlander, Predecessor and Fairly Bert in the Meghalaya state’s legislative assembly elections this weekend. The region’s unusual names stem from the state’s close historical links with Britain, explains Agence France-Presse: in colonial times, missionaries and soldiers would visit the hilly state’s capital Shillong, known as the “Scotland of the East,” to escape the overbearing heat of much of the country, and its residents began naming their children with random English words as a nod to that influence. “Often they don’t know the background of the names. They get attracted to these names for their quest of modernity,” Sanjeeb Kakoty, a history professor at the Indian Institute of Management in Shillong, told AFP. (PHOTOS: India’s Wild East) “Parents may christen their children funny names, but as long as the candidates perform their duties, we have no problem,” a local named Class One told AFP. Previous election winners in Meghalaya have included Churchill and Roosevelt, notes the Daily Telegraph. Adolf Lu Hitler-Marak does have a moustache, but that’s where the resemblance to his Nazi namesake ends. “Maybe my parents liked the name. But I am not a dictator,” he told AFP. The name Hitler does not carry quite the same connotations in India as it does elsewhere, notes CBS. There have been a number of cases of Indian businesses making inappropriate references to the genocidal dictator: last year, a clothing store in Ahmedabad, called Hitler, came under pressure from the local Jewish community to change is name. “I was not aware of Hitler being responsible for the killings of six million people before the shop’s inauguration. This time I will choose a non-controversial name,” the shop’s owner told the BBC. The owners of a Mumbai restaurant named Hitler’s Cross, which had initially displayed a giant poster of the dictator outside, changed the eatery’s name after similar protests, as the BBC reports.
George Galloway, an MP for the leftist Respect Party, stormed out of a debate on Wednesday night at Oxford University after discovering that one of his fellow speakers was an Israeli citizen, writes the Guardian. Galloway refused to take part in the discussion entitled “Israel should withdraw immediately from the West Bank” once it was made clear that his opponent, Oxford student Eylon Asian-Levy, was Israeli. Galloway, who represents the northern England constituency of Bradford West, is a supporter of Palestinian rights and a vocal critic of Israeli policies, often referring to Israel as an apartheid state. (MORE: Yes, it Would be Morally Justified. It Would be Entirely Logical and Explicable) He had already spoken for ten minutes in favor of the motion before handing the floor over to his opponent, writes the Oxford student newspaper Cherwell. However, Asian-Levy, a third-year student in philosophy, politics and economics, was only able to speak for three minutes before being interrupted by Galloway. “You said ‘we’,” exclaimed Galloway. “Are you an Israeli?” When Asian-Levy replied that he was from Israel, Galloway stood up, grabbed his coat, and while walking out the door retorted, “I don’t debate with Israelis. I have been misled, sorry.” His exit led to cries of “racism” from the crowd of students who had gathered to watch the debate. Later that night Galloway tweeted: “I don’t debate with Israelis or speak to their media.
Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny made a historic apology on Tuesday to the survivors of the notorious Magdalene Laundries and the families of more than 10,000 women who were forced into unpaid labor from 1922 to 1996. In an emotional speech to the Irish Parliament, Kenny told the surviving women and their families “this is a national shame for which I say again I am deeply sorry and offer my full and heartfelt apologies.” For more than seven decades in the 20th century, thousands of unmarried mothers, women who had been sexually abused and young girls who had grown up in the care of the state lived and worked in the Irish Magdalene Laundries operated by four orders of Catholic nuns. Ignored by Irish society, 26.5% of these “fallen women” were sent there by the Irish state to work without pay for an average of six months. The Irish government had previously denied playing a role in sending young women to work in laundries. (MORE: Ireland’s Magdalene Laundries: Irish Report Exposes a National Shame) A report released on Feb. 5 by an Irish government committee investigating state involvement revealed new details about conditions in the Magdalene Laundries. Following the release of the report, advocacy groups called on the Irish government to issue an apology on behalf of the state and to provide compensation for the women who spent time in the laundries. Kenny initially decried any “stigma” attached to the women, but declined to apologize for state involvement in the laundries. Two weeks later, Kenny acceded to advocacy groups’ request. “I, as Taoiseach, on behalf of this state, the government and our citizens, deeply regret and apologize unreservedly to all those women for the hurt that was done to them, for any stigma they suffered as a result of the time they spent in the Magdalene laundry,” he said. “We now know that the state itself was directly involved in over a quarter of all admissions to the Magdalene Laundries.” Kenny said the women who were sent to the laundries were blameless and deserved more than a formal

Online retailer Amazon has fired a German security firm which staff allegedly bullied foreign workers and had links to the neo-Nazi movement. A documentary aired on German TV alleged that employees of Hensel European Security Services, or HESS, intimidated and harassed seasonal workers at three of Amazon’s German distribution centers, reports the Daily Telegraph. Security staff, outfitted with black uniforms and military-style haircuts, would routinely search workers’ belongings at their cramped temporary housing at a vacant holiday park, the documentary claimed. Some employees of HESS — an acronym the documentary claimed is a direct reference to Hitler’s deputy, Rudolf Hess — were shown wearing a clothing brand, Thor Steinar, which is linked to the neo-Nazi scene, writes the Telegraph. The documentary also alleged that HESS is headed by a man with links to soccer hooligans. (MORE: ‘Death Match’: Why a Nazi-Era Soccer Movie Is Making Ukraine Angry) “As a responsible employer of approximately 8,000 salaried logistics employees, Amazon has zero tolerance for discrimination and intimidation and expects the same from every company we work with,” Amazon told the Financial Times. But Amazon itself also came under scrutiny: the company, which has about 7,700 people on staff in Germany and hires additional temporary workers at peak times, paid the foreign workers less than the advertised rate, the documentary alleged. One woman from Spain claimed her contract with Amazon was terminated without explanation the day after she complained about the behavior of the security staff, Sky News reports. The company has faced repeated criticism over working conditions in its European distribution centers. Amazon workers in Germany have long complained of intense pressure, random searches and short breaks, notes the Telegraph. And a recent investigation by the Times revealed that workers at an Amazon warehouse in the U.K. walked from 11 km to 24 km per day. MORE: Is There a Future for Same-Day Delivery?
The paralympian Oscar Pistorius has been charged with murder by a South African court following the death of his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, from gunshot wounds at his home within a gated Pretoria housing estate. The woman sustained wounds to her head and the upper body, and was reported to have been shot four times. A 9mm pistol was recovered from the scene. According to Gunpolicy.org, there are just under 6 million licensed firearms in South Africa, which has a population of around 50 million. In a nation notorious for its high level of violent crime and where many people live in fear of home invasions, most South Africans who keep guns do so for personal security. A Daily Mail article in 2011 noted that Pistorius kept a machine gun and a pistol in his bedroom. South Africa’s Firearms Control Act came into force in 2000, following a decade which saw a huge spike in gun-related homicides. People applying for gun licenses now undergo rigorous checks, which take into account issues like a person’s temper, recurring issues of violence, abuse of alcohol. Interviews with spouses are also carried out. Also, a bill which seeks to give police extra powers to arrest anyone carrying a dangerous weapon in public was introduced into parliament this week. “We’ve got good gun legislation,” Alan Storey, chairman of anti-firearm group Gun Free South Africa (GFSA), told TIME. “What has been less than perfect has been the implementation of that gun legislation.” (MORE: Reeva Steenkamp: What to Know about Oscar Pistorius’ Girlfriend) There is a huge backlog in gun license applications, putting the body that administers licenses under pressure — which can lead to negligence. An example: in March 2012, it was reported that notorious underworld figures Mikey Schultz and Nigel McGurk had been reissued with firearm licenses, despite having confessed to the 2005 murder of mining tycoon Brett Kebble (Schultz and McGurk were given immunity from prosecution for the murder because they agreed to testify against the alleged mastermind). Asked whether gun control is adequate, Gun Owners

Someone on the mainland has been watching The Wedding Date. For just $50, women in China now have the opportunity to engage an eligible young man to accompany them home for a family visit, according to a report by the BBC. And with Chinese New Year upon us — one of the biggest travel periods of the year, as millions of Chinese head home for the holiday — the services of these gentlemen are in high demand. (MORE: A Marriage Plot: Love and Art in Beijing) “I’m pretty old – I’m almost 30 – but I’m still single,” Ding Na, a young woman from northeast China who lives in Beijing, explained to the BBC. “I’m under a lot of pressure. My sisters and relatives all ask me why I’m not married.” For many women under that kind of pressure, an answer can be found on China’s online marketplace, Taobao, where a number of solutions can be found. Some men who post charge $5 an hour to accompany a girl to dinner, while others request $8 for a kiss on the cheek. (Sex is not one of the options offered.) The fake boyfriend (or commonly, fake girlfriend) trend is a result of the clash between old and new traditions, Hu Xingdou, a social commentator at the Beijing Institute of Technology, told The Guardian. The pressures of modern urban life make it difficult for young people to meet partners, but their parents still expect them to marry in their early or mid twenties. (MORE: For Love or Real Estate: The Cost of Getting Divorced in China) Despite the views of the older generation, marriage in China has undergone a transformation in recent decades. According to The Economist, many parents continue to play a role in finding a match for their children, even though arranged marriages were banned in 1950. Meanwhile, in part due to the effects of China’s one-child policy, the nation’s birth rate has skewed male – there are 118 boys born for every 100 girls — with the result that by 2020 there will be a surplus

On either side of a small stretch of the border between Pakistan and India—the part that lies between the Pakistani city of Lahore and the Indian city of Amritsar—sits a small region that is undergoing a quiet but remarkable transformation. The growth of trade in this part of the Punjab region, which spans both India and Pakistan, could mean the beginning of a new bond between these two powerful nations and historical rivals. Following Pakistan’s announcement that it plans to grant India most-favored-nation (MFN) status, Pakistan has begun to lift its heavy trade restrictions on India. Many in Pakistan fear that this move will cause its smaller economy to drown in a sea of Indian exports, but others believe that increased trade could help stabilize the fragile relationship between India and Pakistan. TIME’s South Asia Bureau Chief Krista Mahr traveled to the Pakistani town of Jhelum and the major road crossing of Wagah to meet the people most affected by these changes; the miners, traders and families separated by a border drawn over half a century ago. TIME spoke with Mahr about her story in this week’s magazine story, which is available to subscribers here. You’re based in New Delhi. What’s the process for people wanting to cross the land border from India into Pakistan? When I went into Pakistan I crossed overland from India. I had flown to Amritsar and drove to the border. The Indian side was very blocked off and there was nobody there. There were several layers of security to get through the border and I was the only person there crossing on foot. I boarded a government bus where they take you to the end of Indian Territory and then you cross the border on foot. First you are met by a group of soldiers dressed in Indian uniforms and then, after you cross, by soldiers in Pakistani uniforms. There’s a very famous military salute and flag ceremony that happens there every day between the two armies. It’s extremely orchestrated and flamboyant with Pakistanis on

Cameron’s Clarion Call — Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos Thursday, British Prime Minister David Cameron has called for countries to work together in fighting the spread of tax avoidance, writes the BBC. He explained that “trade, tax and transparency” are the U.K.’s economic priorities, particularly during the country’s presidency of the G8 this year. He said those avoiding tax “need to wake up and smell the coffee,” a subtle reference to Starbucks who reportedly pay little tax in the U.K. Cameron reminded the forum that “this is a problem for all countries, not just for Britain.” The PM’s speech in Davos comes a day after his announcement that if reelected in 2015, the Conservative government will call for a referendum to decide whether the U.K. will stay in or out of the European Union. TIME’s Europe editor Catherine Mayer covered Cameron’s E.U. speech. Moroccan Rape Law – The Moroccan government has announced its plans to change a law that allows rapists to evade charges if they marry their victims, reports Aljazeera. Article 475 of the country’s penal code disregards charges against men convicted of “corruption” or “kidnapping” of a minor if the convicted marries the victim. The change in law follows the case last year of a 16-year-old girl who committed suicide after she was forced to marry a 23-year-old who had raped her. Even though the legal age of marriage in Morocco is 18, judges often approve younger unions. The new article will mean a 10-year penalty for consensual sex after the rape of a minor, but this sentence will double if the sex leads to “deflowering.” Assassination Plot – The Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro announced at a rally Wednesday that unidentified groups had entered the country with the aim of assassinating him and the head of the National Assembly, notes Reuters. Maduro was named successor by Hugo Chavez shortly before the Venezuelan president traveled to Havana, Cuba for surgery in early December. This is the fourth surgery Chavez has undergone since he was

The first clinic offering abortions on the island of Ireland opened its doors in the Northern Irish city of Belfast on Oct. 18, but the 400 pro-life protesters gathered outside were determined that no abortion procedures would happen there that day. Buses full of antiabortion demonstrators stood on the sidewalks carrying banners and placards outside the clinic, which is operated by Marie Stopes International, a U.K.-based organization that works worldwide providing reproductive- and sexual-health care services. “We knew we couldn’t sit back and live in a country where unborn babies were being violently destroyed every day,” says Bernadette Smyth, founder of Precious Life, a Northern Irish pro-life group, speaking after her organization’s participation in the protests. “The question of abortions is not a health issue, it’s a criminal one. Marie Stopes will be carrying out abortions illegally.” Smyth’s claim is denied by the clinic. “Marie Stopes is operating completely in line with the current legal framework in Northern Ireland,” says a spokeswoman who requested that her name be withheld amid concerns for staff safety. “There’s a real need for a good sexual-health clinic in Northern Ireland. The clinic was able to open as planned, and we were pleased to receive thousands of messages of positive support from women and men telling us to stand tall against the protesters.” The spokeswoman declined to say whether any women have undergone abortions at the clinic. (MORE: Irish Austerity: Can the Government Last the Course?) An increasingly heated abortion debate, both in Northern Ireland and in the Republic of Ireland, is symptomatic of the island’s extraordinarily rapid transformation in recent decades. In the north, years of political strife and instability had slowed progress in areas of health and women’s rights; now peace, of a kind, is enabling social progress — with all the benefits and new tensions that brings. In the south, the Catholic Church held sway over the majority of political decisions through the 20th century; but a series of scandals involving the sexual abuse of children by priests has weakened an institution that was

Malala Yousafzai sits in a hospital room surrounded by thousands of gifts, cards and messages of support from around the world, a feeling that has left her “inspired and humbled,” according to her father, who appeared in a video released Friday. “She wants me to tell everyone how grateful she is and is amazed that men, women and children from across the world are interested in her well-being,” Ziauddin Yousafzai said. Her story—that of a 15-year-old girl shot in the head by the Taliban for her activism regarding women’s education just a month ago —has garnered so much international attention that United Nations Special Envoy Gordon Brown has declared November 10 “Malala Day” worldwide. To commemorate Malala, he will visit Pakistan to deliver a petition with over a million signatures urging President Asif Ali Zardari to make education in the country available to all children and “outlaw discrimination against girls.” (MORE: Malala Yousafzai: Pakistan Taliban Victim’s Reunited with Family) In a video on his website, the former British Prime Minister pointed to the plight of 61 million children currently out of schools, many of whom have been burdened by child labor, child marriages, recruited as child soldiers or marginalized through disability. “If nothing changes soon we are looking at a world where the children of today become the unemployed and unemployable of tomorrow,” he said. “A world without school is a world without hope. We cannot all be a Malala Yousafzai, but we can all follow her, support her, pray for her.” Yousafzai is being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, England and was featured alongside her father in the video released by the hospital. She appears fully dressed and sitting upright at a table clutching a white teddy bear with a slightly blackened left eye as her father pulls cards from a piles scattered all over the room’s small table and hospital bed. “Her voice is the voice of the people of Pakistan and all down and deprived children of the world,” Ziauddin Yousafzai said. “Malala and all
