(LONDON) — Counterterrorism police on Saturday were questioning a friend of Michael Adebolajo, one of two suspects in the savage killing of a British soldier. The friend, Abu Nusaybah, was arrested immediately after he gave a television interview telling his story about how Adebolajo came to be radicalized. In his interview, Nusaybah said Adebolajo became withdrawn after returning from a visit to study in Kenya, where he claimed he had been physically and sexually abused in detention. Nusaybah also alleged that the U.K.’s security services tried to recruit Adebolajo after he returned to Britain. Adebolajo and another man are suspected of killing 25-year-old soldier Lee Rigby, hacking at his body with knives and a meat cleaver, on a London street in front of dozens of passersby on Wednesday afternoon. Both suspects were shot by police at the scene and are hospitalized under guard in stable condition. (MORE: London Terror Attack: Names, Family Tragedy and Deepening Mystery) The BBC said Nusaybah was arrested by police outside its studios Friday night immediately after recording the interview. “This interviewee had important background information that sheds light on this horrific event,” the broadcaster said in a statement. “And when we asked him to appear and interviewed him, we were not aware he was wanted for questioning by the police.” Metropolitan Police confirmed that a 31-year-old man was arrested Friday night in London on suspicion of “the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism.” He is in custody at a London police station, police said, adding that the arrest was not directly related to the killing of Rigby. Nusaybah told the BBC that he believed Adebolajo changed after he was allegedly detained and abused by security forces in a Kenyan prison cell last year. After that, Adebolajo became “less talkative … he wasn’t his bubbly self,” Nusaybah said. He also said that Adebolajo told him that Britain’s security service, the MI5, followed him upon his return to the U.K. to find out if he knew certain individuals and then to ask if he would work

(MAKHACHKALA, Russia) — A female suicide bomber identified as a widow of two killed Islamists blew herself up in the southern Russian region of Dagestan on Saturday injuring at least 18, including two children and five police officers, police said. The bomber detonated an explosives-laden belt in the central square in the provincial capital, Makhachkala, Dagestan’s police spokesman Vyacheslav Gasanov said. The bomber was identified as Madina Alieva, who married an Islamist who was killed in 2009 and then wedded another Islamic radical who was gunned down last year, police spokeswoman Fatina Ubaidatova said. Since 2000, at least two dozen women, most of them from the Caucasus, have carried out suicide bombings in Russian cities and aboard trains and planes. All were linked to an Islamic insurgency that spread throughout Dagestan and the predominantly Muslim Caucasus region after two separatist wars in neighboring Chechnya. (MORE: Bombing Probe Casts Spotlight on Awkward U.S.-Russia Security Ties) The bombers are often called “black widows” in Russia because many are the widows, or other relatives, of militants killed by security forces. Islamic militants are believed to convince “black widows” that a suicide bombing will reunite them with their dead relatives beyond the grave. Police said two of the people injured in the attack were in a critical condition. There were no details about the injured children. The Tsarnaev brothers suspected of carrying out last month’s Boston marathon bombings, are ethnic Chechens who lived in Dagestan before moving to the United States. Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the elder brother who was killed a shootout with police days after the April 15 bombings, spent six months in Dagestan in 2012. Dagestan remains an epicenter of violence in the confrontation between radical Islamists and federal forces. This week, a double explosion in Makhachkala killed four civilians and left 44 injured, while three security officers and three suspected militants have been killed in other incidents. Islamists strive to create an independent Muslim state, or “emirate,” in the Caucasus and parts of southern Russia with a sizable Muslim population. The status of “assisting witness” means that Lagarde could later be charged in the case. The court assigned her the status Friday after two long days of questioning in the case.
Violence and fear travel swiftly, and faster still in the era of tweets and status updates and 24-hour rolling news. Just after 2 pm on May 22, police answered a call to an incident in Woolwich, southeast London. A 25-year-old soldier, Drummer Lee Rigby, leaving the local barracks, had been hit by a car and then hacked to death in front of horrified onlookers. One of his alleged killers, later identified as Michael Adebolajo, linked the attack to the British military presence in Muslim countries. “We must fight them as they fight us, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth,” he said, waving a bloodied cleaver. Video, filmed by an onlooker, was quickly picked up by news organizations and disseminated on social media. At 7.15 pm, a man, reportedly armed with a knife, threw an incendiary device into a small mosque in Braintree, a market town in Essex. At 8.40 pm, another small mosque in another English market town, Gillingham in Kent, sustained a broken window and damage to a bookcase housing copies of the Koran. Back in Woolwich, the far right English Defence League (EDL) staged a demonstration against Islam and skirmished with police. In a video posted on the group’s website, its leader Tommy Robinson (also sometimes known as Stephen Lennon and Paul Harris), said “We are at war, and unless you can name the enemy you won’t win that war… The enemy is Islam.” The far right British National Party is calling for a demonstration against “the wicked and cruel enemy within.” Since news broke of the Woolwich murder, tensions in Britain have ratcheted up. Scotland Yard has increased the numbers of officers on patrol. Social media users were quick to ask whether the May 24 emergency landing of a British Airways jet at Heathrow might be terror-related; BA said a technical fault had caused the incident. Mere hours later, Royal Air Force jets escorted a Pakistan International Airlines flight from Lahore away from its intended destination of Manchester, in Northern England, to Stansted,

(LONDON) — Britain scrambled fighter jets Friday to intercept a commercial airliner carrying more than 300 people from Pakistan, diverting it to an isolated runway at an airport on the outskirts of London and arresting two British passengers who allegedly threatened to destroy the plane. A British security official said the situation involving the Pakistan International Airlines flight did not appear terror-related, though police were still investigating, but the incident further rattled the U.K. just days after a soldier was killed on a London street in a suspected terror attack. The security official requested anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation. (MORE: London Terror Attack: Names, Family Tragedy and Deepening Mystery) A Pakistani official briefed by British police and PIA security on the investigation said the two suspects, speaking Urdu, allegedly threatened to “destroy the plane” after an argument with crew. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the case on the record. Flight P709 was traveling from Lahore, Pakistan, to Manchester Airport when it was diverted by the fighter jets to Stansted Airport. The U.K. Ministry of Defense confirmed that Typhoon jets were launched to investigate an incident involving a civilian aircraft but gave no further details. Passenger Nauman Rizvi told Pakistan’s GEO TV that two men who had tried to move toward the cockpit during the flight were handcuffed and arrested once the plane landed. Rizvi said that after the men were taken away, the flight crew told passengers there had been a terrorist threat and that the pilot had raised an alarm. Essex Police said they were notified at 1:20 p.m. local time (12:20 GMT, 8:20 a.m. EDT) that a threat had been made to an aircraft. The force said that after the Boeing 777 landed at 2:15 p.m., armed officers entered it and arrested two British nationals, aged 30 and 41, on suspicion of endangering the aircraft. The suspects were taken to a police station where they face questioning, the police said in a statement.
(BEIRUT) — The Syrian government has agreed “in principle” to attend a conference proposed by Russia and the United States on ending the Arab country’s conflict, Russia’s foreign ministry said Friday. It was the first confirmation that President Bashar Assad‘s government would be willing to take part in the talks with the opposition. (MORE: Syria Government to Take Part in Peace Conference) But despite the announcement from Moscow, one of Assad’s staunchest allies, Damascus has not offered any definitive statement on the proposed talks. Russia and the U.S. joined efforts earlier this month to convene an international conference to bring representatives of Assad’s regime and the opposition to the negotiating table. The aim of the talks would be to establish the outlines of a transitional government as a way out of the crisis. More than 70,000 people have been killed and several million displaced since the uprising against Assad erupted in March 2011 and escalated into a civil war. The U.S.-Russian plan, similar to the one set out last year in Geneva, calls for talks on a transitional government and an open-ended cease-fire. The Moscow announcement came after days of talks there between Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faysal Mekdad and Russian officials. Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in televised remarks Friday that the Syrian government has “agreed in principle” to participate in the conference in Geneva, which is expected within two weeks. “We note with satisfaction that we have received an agreement in principle from the Syrian government in Damascus to participate in the international conference, in the interest of Syrians themselves, to find a political solution,” Lukashevich said. He added, however, that it is impossible to set the date for the conference at this point because there is “no clarity about who will speak on behalf of the opposition and what powers they will have.” Lukashevich also said Moscow “was not encouraged” by the results of recent meetings of members of the Syrian National Coalition, the country’s main opposition group that has called on Assad to step

(LONDON) — A British Airways jet made an emergency landing at London’s Heathrow Airport Friday after developing a technical problem after takeoff. TV footage showed smoke streaming from one of the engines. Airport officials briefly closed both runways at Europe’s busiest airport, causing delays. They later resumed operation, but passengers were advised to check their flight status. British Airways said it was canceling short-haul flights in and out of Heathrow until 4 p.m. (11 a.m. EDT) so that it could “stabilize our schedule.” Heathrow officials said passengers were evacuated safely from the stricken plane. Footage broadcast on British television showed the plane in the air with smoke pouring from one engine. British Airways said the Airbus A319 was carrying 75 passengers and crew and that it had just taken off from Heathrow on a flight to Oslo, Norway. The airline added an investigation is underway. The jet was surrounded by fire vehicles after it landed, and passengers and crew used evacuation slides to leave the plane. London Ambulance Service said it treated three people for minor injuries. Eyewitness Baba Sariffodeen, who filmed video of the plane as it approached Heathrow, said he could see dark smoke coming from one of the engines. Sariffodeen, who studied aeronautics, said he suspected a fuel problem might have been the cause.
(MOSCOW) — A powerful earthquake on Friday hit Russia’s Far East with tremors felt as far away as Moscow, about 7,000 kilometers (4,400 miles) west of the epicenter. Marina Kolomiyets, spokeswoman for Obninsk’s seismic station of the Russian Academy of Sciences, told The Associated Press the epicenter was in the Sea of Okhotsk, east of the Russian coast and north of Japan. She said the quake registered 8.0 on the Richter scale. The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude of 8.2. The epicenter was in the Kuril-Kamchatka arc, one of the most seismically active regions in the world. Emergency agencies in the Far East issued a tsunami warning for Sakhalin and the Kuril islands, but lifted it soon afterwards. Kolomiyets said the earthquake originated 600 kilometers (375 miles) under the sea bed and with the tremors so far down they have the potential to spread quite far. Russian news agencies reported that residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky on the Kamchatka peninsula in the Okhotsk Sea felt the tremors for about five minutes. Residents ran out of the buildings. School children were evacuated. Tremors were felt in Moscow, prompting some people to evacuate from buildings across the city. Tremors are extremely rare in Moscow, the last recorded instance was in the 1977. The Russian Meteorological Service confirmed these reports but said they did not have immediate information about the magnitude of the tremors of Moscow. Russian news agencies also cited eyewitnesses reporting strong tremors across Siberia.

The whole world witnessed the aftermath of the suspected May 22 terror attack in London. Bystanders filmed and photographed the body of a man, lying in a suburban street, as his apparent killers, not fleeing but seeming to flaunt their work, remained at the scene. But despite this immediacy, the key, human details were missing. Investigators are still a long way from piecing together exactly what happened and why, but details are emerging about the suspects—and the victim. The man so brutally targeted was a soldier, 25-year-old Drummer Lee Rigby. He had a nickname, “Riggers,” and hailed from Manchester. And he had a two-year-old son called Jack. Lieutenant Colonel Jim Taylor MBE, Commanding Officer Second Fusiliers, said in a statement on Thursday that Rigby “was a real character within the Second Fusiliers. Larger than life, he was at the heart of our Corps of Drums.” Rigby, who joined the army in 2006, had taken up a post with the recruiting team at his regiment’s London headquarters. He had served abroad too, including a dangerous tour of duty in Afghanistan. The suspect in his murder who ranted at a rolling camera phone, bloodied and carrying a cleaver, appeared to suggest service by British military in Muslim countries made all British soldiers such as Rigby legitimate targets. Sources have put a name to that face too. He is thought to be Michael Olumide Adebolajo, a 28-year-old, according to sources for the Guardian and other British news organizations. Yet every fresh revelation about Adebolajo raises as many questions as answers. Born and bred in Lambeth, a London neighborhood lying south of the Thames, Adebolajo reportedly moved with his family to Romford, in Essex, where he attended Marshalls Park School and Havering Sixth Form college. Former neighbors describe the Adebolajo family as deeply Christian; “they were,” one man told the Guardian “very pleasant, a very ordinary normal family.” Adebolajo is thought to have converted to Islam a decade ago after he began studying at the University of Greenwich and became involved with the extremist group al-Muhajiroun.
(LONDON) — British police say two more people have been arrested by officers investigating the hacking death of a U.K. soldier in London. Scotland Yard said counterterrorism officers arrested a man and a woman — both 29 — on Thursday on suspicion of conspiracy to murder. Both suspects are in custody at a south London police station. Two suspects shot and arrested by police at the scene Wednesday — a 22-year-old man and a 28-year-old man — remain hospitalized in stable condition with injuries that are not life-threatening, police added. THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP’s earlier story is below. Two Muslim hardliners say the man seen wielding a bloody butcher’s knife after the killing of a British soldier is a Muslim convert who took part in demonstrations with the banned radical group al-Muhajiroun. Former al-Muhajiroun head Anjem Choudary identified the man as Michael Adebolajo, a Christian who converted to Islam around 2003 and took part in several of the group’s demonstrations in London. Omar Bakri Muhammad — who now lives in Lebanon but had been a radical Muslim preacher in London — also said he recognized the man seen on television as Adebolajo and said he attended his London lectures in the early 2000s. Police have not named Adebolajo.
(LONDON) — Two men accused of butchering a British soldier had been part of previous investigations by security services, a British official said Thursday, as investigators searched several locations and tried to determine whether the men were part of a wider plot to instill terror on the streets of London. The men, suspected of hacking the off-duty soldier to death while horrified bystanders watched, boasted of their exploits and warned of more violence in images recorded on witnesses’ mobile phones. Holding bloody knives and a meat cleaver, they waited for the arrival of police, who shot them in the legs, according to a passerby who tried to save the dying soldier. Prime Minister David Cameron vowed that Britain would not be cowed by the horrific violence, and that it would reject “the poisonous narrative of extremism on which this violence feeds.” Indeed, there were few signs of alarm in the British capital, which has been hit by terrorist attacks during a long confrontation with the Irish Republican Army and more recently by al-Qaida-inspired attacks. “It’s hateful, it’s horrific and upsetting. But it doesn’t seem to have made much of a difference,” Christian White, 43, said at King’s Cross station, close to the site of a subway bomb in July 2005. “Londoners are used to living in a city where life is complicated.” Even so, security was increased at military barracks and installations in the capital, with extra armed guards added in many cases. Police said extra patrols were added at sensitive areas, including places of worship, transport hubs and congested areas. Britain’s Ministry of Defense said the soldier killed was Lee Rigby, of 2nd Battalion The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers. Rigby, a 25-year-old with a 2-year-old son, Jack, joined the army in 2006 and was posted first to Cyprus and later served in Afghanistan and Germany. He took up a recruiting post with the military in London in 2011. Wednesday’s attack took place near a military barracks in the Woolwich area of south London. The scene was bizarre in a prosperous capital known for

British Prime Minister David Cameron this morning denounced right-wing riots and attacks on mosques as “knee-jerk responses” to the brutal knife attack apparently committed by two men on a London street yesterday as the attack was still being investigated. After an emergency meeting of COBRA, the government’s crisis response committee, Cameron issued a statement in which he emphasized that “This was not just an attack on Britain – and on our British way of life. It was also a betrayal of Islam – and of the Muslim communities who are give so much to our country.” Hours after news broke that a man believed to be a British soldier had been attacked and killed by two men wielding meat cleavers and knives in London, right-wing extremists had taken to the streets. More than 100 activists from the far right-wing group, the English Defense League (EDL), demonstrated in Woolwich, the area of London where the attack occurred, in retaliation to the perceived Islamic-extremism that allegedly prompted the attack. Details about the two assailants – who were both shot by armed police officers who arrived on the scene 20 minutes after the heinous attack and are currently under arrest at the hospitals where they are being treated – were still scant the morning after the attack. Government and police statements had indicated early on that they regarded the crime as an act of terrorism. Adding to the horror was disturbing footage taken at the scene of the crime that revealed one of the alleged attackers, covered in blood and still holding a bloodied meat cleaver and knife, discussing the attack. “We swear to you, by the almighty Allah, we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone,” he’s heard to say on the film. (MORE: Man Hacked to Death on Busy London Street) The video and the subsequent fear likely prompted the leader of the EDL, Tommy Robinson, to send out a request via Twitter for “feet on the streets” of Woolwich – a request that many heeded.
David Cameron has a reputation for taking things easy. He plays games on his iPad; he revels in family life; an anonymous friend told his biographers Francis Elliott and James Hanning that “if there was an Olympic gold medal for chillaxing, he would win it.” If any chillaxing time was scheduled into his four-night, three-city tour to the U.S. last week, it was mostly on the executive jet that ferried Britain’s Prime Minister and an assortment of advisers and journalists—including TIME—across the Atlantic and from destination to destination. In Washington, on May 13, he met with President Obama to discuss a range of issues including the G8 summit, which Britain hosts next month, and to relay soundings after a quick dash to Russia two days earlier to discuss Syria with President Putin. In Boston, Cameron met Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and toured the makeshift memorial to the Marathon bombing victims in Copley Square. In New York, at an event to promote Britain, he exited a red double-decker London bus with Prince Harry, to screams from the crowd. (TIME: Read Catherine Mayer’s International Cover Story on David Cameron, Available to Subscribers Here) He’s used to being screamed at, if not so appreciatively, in the House of Commons and by his own Conservative colleagues. Since 2010, Cameron has headed a coalition government of Conservatives and Liberal Democrats. Many Tories suspect he feels rather too comfortable in company with the Lib Dems and are outraged by his backing for gay marriage. On the left he is seen as a rightwing ideologue in liberal camouflage. During a visit to TIME’s New York offices editors asked him about these conflicting perceptions. “If you take both these criticisms and work out they can’t [both] be right, you end up with a very sensible, practical, hard-headed, proud Brit who does the best for his country,” he said. The profile of Cameron in the new issue of TIME is based on that conversation, observations from within his traveling party and over seven years and six exclusive interviews Cameron

(LONDON) — A British government official says both suspects in the brutal killing of a solider were part of previous security services investigations for possible terror links. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak about the investigation, said he could not provide other details because the suspects may face trial. Investigations by Britain’s domestic security service, MI5, can include undercover surveillance, phone tapping and communications intercepts. The British government’s emergency committee met Thursday after two attackers butchered a British soldier in a daylight attack in London that raised fears terrorism had returned to the capital. Prime Minister David Cameron says there are strong indications it was an act of terrorism, and his top advisers will be examining the potential security implications of the attack, which took place near a military barracks in the Woolwich area of the city. Police Thursday confirmed the dead man was a serving soldier and said his identity will not be released yet at his family’s request. They said a post-mortem examination will be conducted later Thursday. One of the attackers went on video to explain the crime — shouting political statements, gesturing with bloodied hands and waving a meat cleaver. Police shot and wounded the unidentified assailants and took them into custody. British media say the victim was wearing a shirt in support of troops when he was killed. Security has been tightened at military barracks and authorities say they are updating their guidance for military personnel. Police in the county of Lincolnshire in eastern England said a property was being searched in connection to the attack in Woolwich. Police said a search warrant had been obtained but would not provide details about the search. Police were also scouring the attack site for further clues. London Mayor Boris Johnson urged the people of the city to remain calm. Leaving the meeting of the emergency committee, Johnson appeared to indicate the attack was being seen as a one-off incident.
(PARIS) — International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has appeared at a special Paris court to face questioning over a controversial arbitrage deal that she oversaw as French finance minister. The 2008 deal handed about 400 million euros to magnate Bernard Tapie to settle a dispute with state-owned bank Credit Lyonnais over the botched sale of Adidas in the 1990s. Tapie was close to then-French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who was Lagarde’s boss. Critics have said the deal was too generous to Tapie at the expense of the French state. Lagarde left her Paris apartment Thursday morning and appeared at a special court that handles cases involving government ministers. She has denied wrongdoing.

(LONDON) — Two U.K. government officials say a brutal attack that left one man dead near a London military barracks appears to have been motivated by radical Islam. Two men apparently attacked another man near a London barracks Wednesday. Police said he died and the other two were shot by police and taken to separate hospitals. Two U.K. government officials who had been briefed said the attack seemed to have been ideologically motivated by radical Islam. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak about the ongoing investigation. They said their categorization was not based solely on video footage of what appeared to be one attacker criticizing the British government. British Prime Minister David Cameron said there are “strong indications” that the attack is related to terror.
A man has been killed in a violent attack in the southeast London area of Woolwich. Police arrived at the scene and shot the two assailants, who according to eyewitness accounts had a firearm. There have been unconfirmed suggestions, including from local MP Nick Raynsford and French President François Hollande, that the victim, who was wearing a Help for Heroes T-shirt (a military charity for wounded British soldiers), was a soldier. Prime Minister David Cameron has not confirmed that the incident, which took place close to a primary school and an army barracks, is a terrorist attack, but said during a press conference in Paris, where he is visiting Hollande, that “there is a strong indication that it is a terrorist attack.” According to a statement from Metropolitan Police Commander Simon Letchford, police were called to an incident on John Wilson Street at 2:20 p.m. this afternoon. Eyewitness accounts, including from some who took to Twitter to report the attack, suggest that two men drove into the victim and then got out of the car to hack him with a machete. The two men then allegedly dragged his body into the middle of John Wilson Street before asking bystanders to photograph and film them. (PHOTOS: Terror in the U.K.) Witness James Heneghan told radio station LBC 97.3 that he and his wife saw two men “hacking this poor guy, hacking him, chopping him.” He said they “were oblivious to anything, they were more worried about having their photo taken, running up and down the road.” Footage (which may be distressing to some viewers) has emerged of one of the alleged attackers, carrying a meat cleaver and knife with bloodied hands, saying, “I apologize that women have had to witness this today, but in our land women have to see the same. You people will never be safe. Remove your government, they don’t care about you.” Speculation that this is terrorism has been spurred by rumors, which BBC political editor Nick Robinson says have been repeated by senior Whitehall sources, that the attackers were

(LONDON) — A brazen, brutal attack near a military barracks in London on Wednesday afternoon left one man dead and two suspects in the hospital. British Prime Minister David Cameron said the attack appeared to be terror-related. The attack occurred in the southeast London neighborhood of Woolwich, just a few blocks from the Royal Artillery Barracks. Two men reportedly attacked another man. Witnesses said the two men were shot by police and a number of weapons — including butchers’ knives — could be seen on the street, which was splattered by blood. French President Francois Hollande, speaking at a press conference in Paris with Cameron, said it was a British soldier who was killed. Cameron didn’t immediately confirm that fact but the Britain’s Ministry of Defense said it was urgently investigating the attack. Cameron did say said there were “strong indications” it was a terrorist incident. “We have suffered these attacks before, we have always beaten them back,” Cameron said. “We will not be cowed, we will never buckle.” Live television images of the scene showed a trail of blood staining a pavement, cordoned off streets and crime scene investigators marking the scene. The British Cabinet’s emergency committee immediately called a meeting and the prime minister’s Downing Street office said security was stepped up at barracks across London. Commander Simon Letchford said one man was found dead and two men were shot by police and taken to separate London hospitals. One of the men was in serious condition, according to London Ambulance Service. Fred Oyat, a 44-year-old who lives in a high-rise near where the attack occurred, said he heard four gun shots and then went straight to the window. “I saw one man lying there bleeding, another lying on the pavement being disarmed. A policeman was pointing a gun at him. A third man was lying further up the street … he was bleeding profusely,” Oyat said. “There were four knives on the ground — big kitchen knives. The knives were very bloody.” Cameron’s office said he was cutting short

Like many boys in Antwerp, Brian De Mulder dreamed of being a professional footballer. His favorite team was continental powerhouse FC Barcelona and he sought to emulate its Argentine superstar Leo Messi, proudly wearing “10″ on the back of his jersey. He had started playing the game at the age of six and grew into a talented attacker. He planned to make a life of it. Two years ago, Brian, then 17, was among several youth cut from his local cash-strapped club. He was devastated to be sidelined and distraught at what seemed like the end of a dream, his family told TIME. They couldn’t have predicted what happened next. Brian was raised Catholic and rarely got into trouble. He was tall and slim, with dark shaggy hair. He was proud of his mixed heritage—his mother is Brazilian—and often wore a white cross around his neck, a childhood gift from her. Shortly after being booted from the roster, a group of Moroccan teenagers invited him to play indoors. He jumped at the chance to the fill the void. At some point over the next two months, he started hanging around their mosque. They named him Ibrahim, says his older sister, Bruna Rodriguez. Later, he converted to Islam and changed his name to Abu Qasem Brazili. His parents were stunned by the sudden transformation, but the liberal De Mulders tolerated it. “She thought it was a phase of a teenager—of puberty,” Rodriguez, 25, said of their mother, who declined requests to speak with TIME. “‘In six months it will be over,’ she hoped. But it became worse with his age.” (VIDEO: The YouTube War: Online Videos Spread Fear in Syria) He was a good student, but tensions flared at school when he told other Muslims they weren’t pious enough; he left three months before earning his diploma. By his 18th birthday, he had taken up basic Arabic and would drop to his knees five times each day to pray. “It was more philosophical back then,” his aunt, Ingrid De Mulder, says. “He
