He would never have been cast to play the role of a bloody South American dictator in a Hollywood film. Soft-spoken, deeply religious, rake thin and awkward, his lean face cut horizontally by an incongruously thick walrus mustache, his fellow army officers nicknamed him affectionately the Pink Panther. The name stuck and was picked up by the press after General Jorge Rafael Videla overthrew Argentina’s democratically elected government in 1976 as head of a military junta that imposed a seven-year reign of terror in which some 20,000 Argentines were brutally murdered. “Videla belongs to that class of people who reveal the mediocrity of evil and who prove that the devil can incarnate in just anyone,” Argentine author Tomás Eloy Martínez once wrote. But behind the gentlemanly mask lurked a mind poisoned with the abhorrent idea that thousands of young people — Argentina’s revolutionaries of the late 1960s and early ’70s — had to “disappear” to prevent Argentina from falling into the hands of godless communism. “Argentina is by history Western and Christian,” Videla once told a group of British journalists. “A terrorist is defined not only by killing with a gun or planting a bomb, but also by activating with ideas contrary to our civilization.” These Western and Christian values, Videla believed, were threatened by modern maths, a “subversive” subject that was struck from school curricula, and the Uncle Scrooge character in Donald Duck cartoons, banned from television because Disney’s creation, the “richest duck in the world,” was believed to be a sly satire on capitalism that favored communist sympathies. Yet Videla was seen by some a dove among the hawks within the military junta, one who kept in line even more bloodthirsty generals like Ibérico Saint-Jean, who in 1977 declared: “First we will kill the subversives, then we will kill their collaborators, then their sympathizers, followed by the indifferent and finally the timid.” Before British journalist Robert Cox was forced to leave Argentina in 1979 because of his brave reporting on human-rights crimes committed by Videla’s government, the military

UPDATED Like many other older churchmen, politicians and businessmen in Argentina, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio has been questioned by some for his role during this country’s bloody 1976–83 military dictatorship, when tens of thousands of young dissidents were made to “disappear” in the death camps set up by the generals who ruled the country. The Catholic Church in Argentina realized that its behavior during that dark period was so unsaintly that in 2000 it made a public apology for its failure to take a stand against the generals. “We want to confess before God everything we have done badly,” Argentina’s Episcopal Conference said at that time. “We share everyone’s pain and once again ask the forgiveness of everyone we failed or didn’t support as we should have,” Argentina’s bishops said in a statement again last year after former dictator Jorge Videla, now serving a life sentence, claimed in an interview that he had received the blessing of the country’s top clergymen for the actions of his regime. (MORE: Cover Story: Pope of the Americas) Since he was anointed cardinal by Pope John Paul II in Rome in 2000, Jorge Bergoglio has had to contend with repeated allegations over his actions — and inaction — in the years of what is called the “Dirty War.” Those claims have resurfaced now that he has become Pope Francis, the first Pontiff from the New World. Even before his election as Pope, Bergoglio has always been a popular and admired figure among Argentine Catholics. The general criticism against him has been that raised against most prominent personalities of the period of junta rule: that he perhaps did not do enough at the time to try to stop the generals, that he did not speak out publicly about the thousands of desaparecidos — the disappeared who vanished without a trace and whose mothers protested for answers in a plaza in Buenos Aires. Most Argentines are aware, however that if Bergoglio had been an active critic of the regime, he would almost certainly not have lived to

When asked about her identity, Laura Jayne Minto Ceballos, a 19-year-old Falkland Islander studying in the U.K., has a less than straightforward answer. Her father’s family hails from Scotland and her Chilean mother was born in Argentina. “But when it comes to talking about the Falklands,” she says, “I am definitely British.” It’s a sentiment that’s been echoed by her fellow islanders in the March 10-11 referendum that asked them a simple question: whether they wish to remain an overseas territory of the U.K. It was never in doubt how the islanders would respond – bookmakers in Britain referred to it as “the biggest certainty in political betting history”—but like the Falklands conflict in 1982, when Argentina and the U.K. went to war over the archipelago, the outcome of the referendum won’t settle a bitter sovereignty dispute between London and Buenos Aires. For Ceballos and many of her compatriots, that perhaps misses a wider point: “I think we are finally getting our voices heard and finally making a momentous stand for ourselves.” Geopolitical tensions flared up last year—the 30th anniversary of the 1982 conflict—when politicians in both the U.K. and Argentina rehashed the same arguments about who is the rightful owner of the islands, which the Argentinians call Las Malvinas. In a bid to settle the matter, the U.K. proposed a referendum to ask the 1,672 individuals eligible to vote (there are fewer than 3,000 people on the archipelago) whether they would like to remain British. Argentina dismissed it outright as a rigged ballot, arguing that the vote essentially asks a group of British settlers if they wish to remain British. (PHOTOS: British Photographer Jon Tonks searches for Empire) So far in the dispute, the Falkland Islanders themselves have played a minor role. The U.K. is responsible for the territory’s foreign policy and defense, and Argentina refuses in any case to deal directly with them, a state of affairs that has caused great frustration among the islanders. “You could say we feel like the duck in the basket in the
