Israel has said that it carried out a joint missile test with the United States over the Mediterranean, after Russian radar detected two ballistic “objects” on Tuesday morning.

Initial reports of the launch by Russian news agencies ruffled financial markets because the U.S. is preparing for possible military strikes on Syria, reported Reuters. Israel’s defense ministry said it had tested a single “Anchor” target missile. The ministry said the missile was part of a U.S.-funded anti-missile system, Sky News reported.

Five U.S. destroyers and an amphibious ship are in the Mediterranean, poised for possible strikes against Syria with non-ballistic cruise missiles, said Reuters. Russia opposes outside military intervention in Syria and a ministry official had earlier criticized the U.S. for its deployment of warships in the Mediterranean close to Syria, Sky News reported.
