Rupert Murdoch, Executive Chairman of News Corp, Chairman and CEO of 21st Century Fox, in Sun Valley Idaho, USA, 9 July 2013.

Activist group GetUp! is accusing Australian commercial television of stifling free speech by not running their anti-Rupert Murdoch advert ahead of Saturday’s national election. In the clip, a man picks up dog droppings with one of Murdoch’s newspapers and says: “Political bias presented as news is, well, misleading crap. Don’t let the crap decide your vote.”

The ad (below), which has garnered considerable attention online, was called “distasteful” by the Seven Network, while Network Ten, where Murdoch’s son Lachlan is a director, said they did not want to target another media organization.

Murdoch is a staunch supporter of the conservative opposition, and his Australian tabloid The Daily Telegraph has previously published digitally altered images of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd wearing a Nazi uniform.
