A powerful earthquake in a remote area of Pakistan killed more than 30 people on Tuesday and shook buildings as far away as New Delhi, hundreds of miles to the east in India.

The earthquake, which the United States Geological Survey said was a 7.8 magnitude quake, collapsed scores of mud houses in the impoverished, thinly populated region in the province of Baluchistan, near the Iranian border, Reuters reports. The AP put the death toll at 39 as of Tuesday afternoon.

The deputy speaker of the Baluchistan assembly told Reuters that 30 percent of the houses in one district caved in. The Pakistani military deployed 200 troops to the site and relief supplies are already streaming in.
