A young girl was rescued alive Friday from the wreckage of a five-story residential building that collapsed in, but dozens trapped in the wreckage.
The Associated Press reports that the girl was pulled alive out of the rubble as onlookers chanted “baby, baby.”
At least four people died, with some reports putting the body count at six. The New York Times reports that more than two dozen fire trucks and 15 ambulances raced to the scene.
“The building was around 30 years old. We had issued a notice to them in April to vacate the building, but they did not act,” municipality spokesman Vijay Khabale Patil told BBC. The National Disaster Management Authority told AFP that between 80 and 90 residents could be trapped in the building.
It’s the latest in a string of deadly collapses in Mumbai this year. In April, more than 70 people were killed when a factory building collapsed.
